Multifunction Printers?
« on: Friday 19 November 04 09:44 GMT (UK) »
I'm going to be getting a new printer soon, as mine is on its last legs. I thought I'd get a multifunction printer, save buying a separate scanner, which is what I was going to do.

So does anyone have any experience with mutlifunction printers? Can you recommend a good one? I only want to spend up to about £140.

Thanks!!

Amy,

Fitty sneaked her answer in whilst I was typing mine - but good to know great minds etc  ;D

If your talking inkjet, then you'll be pushed to find anything better than Epson, whilst HP dominate the Laser market, their inkjets are not as good as Epson.  Saying that we do have many HP inkjets that have performed as well as the Epson's, but in general we get less problems with the Epson models. also Epson tend to be slightly cheaper as do their consumables. The HP PSC range are the ones to check out.

I can suggest two models:
1) Epson Stylus CX660  cost around £120 + vat

2) Epson Stylus RX500  cost around £ 170 + vat
http://www.epson.co.uk/products/all_in_one_products/Stylus_Photo_RX500.htm

There is also the RX420 at around £100 + vat

I also have a HP PSC Multifunction printer.  I am happy with it, but one big drawback if you are printing lots, is that the HP ink cartridges are very dear.

I haven't found any alternative cartridges for these printers, just firms who will refill your old ones.

I have the HP psc 1210 Printer/scanner/copier
I have had no problems with it and I can get cheaper cartridges (print-rite) or have refills.

Last I saw (in Wales) they were £69 in argos

Luck you, Jen !  I have the PSC 1210 and I can't get cheaper cartridges !

But I like the "small footprint" (slightly larger than A4), it doesn't take up a lot of room and is useable as photocopyer without turning on the computer

We had a Xerox multifunction - it was rubbish in every way. we scrapped it and bought an HP 7110 [includes a plain paper fax] and it has been perfect and has never given any trouble at all.
We buy all such things from Viking Office products and they have a no questions asked replacement or refund policy if you have problems.
HP has a model 4219 which is £140.00 [plus VAT] and that also has a fax. Just make sure when you buy that if you need flat-bed copying that you are  not buying a machine which only copies on feed though.

I can recommend the HP PSC All in one 1200 series too. I paid £99 for mine !!  I get my ink from Ink2u (www.ink2u.co.uk) at a good price and efficient next-day service.

I refill my own ink cartridges with the Ink Refill System made by IMS in the USA.

www.ims-ink.com

Is compatible with all inkjet printers and inkjet multifunction printers. Full instruction is given and it is an easy exercise that saves you a fortune!

I get them from Costco's at less than £20 for the pack of colours & black which are injected by hyperdermic needles, the cartridges will wear out before your supply of refillable ink.
