Any Relations of Lucy S Newman?
« on: Monday 08 January 07 07:09 GMT (UK) »
I have an old prayer book from the 1800's which was passed to my Great Grandmother's sister Stella.  In the book, Stella has noted that she has written to L S Newman at 4 P?????? Parade, Cheltenham Gloucestershire England (this letter was sent from Australia) on 15 May 1905.   Does anyone from that area possibly have an Ephraim Newman in their family tree who went to Australia in the mid to late 1800s?

Hi Amanda,

Unfortunately I don't not have Newmans in my tree but I just love little nuggets like you have in your prayer book.

Hi Julia,

Thanks for that information, thats great.  ;D  Hopefully I connect the people in the prayer book to my Great Grandmother's father.

If there is anyone related to Lucy S Newman out there, I would love to hear from you.

Regards,
Amanda

Hi amanda
I am also searching Newmans in Cheltenham and surrounding areas.
Most of mine come from Prestbury which is on the outskirts of Cheltenham itself.
I Don't have a Lucy Newman in my tree unfortunately.
But I have found Lucy S Newman In the 1901 census for you.
She is age 72, Living on her own means, in Pittville Parade. A very nice area.
She has no family with her at that time.
Do you have any more information from the census?
If you don't I am quite willing to find it for you.
Good luck
Sandie

Hi Amanda (again)
Forgot to mention that according to census, Lucy was born in Stroudwater, Gloucestershire.

Hi Sandie,

Thanks for your reply  :), Julia had posted the census info earlier but rootschat deleted it.

I've found Lucy on the 1881 census since living with her sisters Matilda, Arabella and Caroline.  They also had a maid and a cook.  They appear to have all been old spinsters and were living off the family's money, obviously very well off.

Only Matilda's christening 1804 is on IGI though, along with two brothers Charles Samuel 1798 and Henry 1801 and another sister Helen 1809, all in Stroud.  The younger three sisters missed out on being listed which means there could be more siblings too.

I've put all the pieces of the prayer book together (there were lots of dates and names written in there) by using the New South Wales Births Deaths and Marriages Index as a reference.  My Great Great Grandfather was Frederick Augustus Newman born in Sydney in 1845, it appears his Aunty was Lucy back in England.  Frederick's father was Charles Alfred Newman so I'm guessing that the Charles Samuel listed in 1798 died and then they had a younger son and named him Charles after the first one died (I've found they did that a bit back then, one child died so they give the next one the same name) - either that or Charles had two middle names  ??? Are there any records other than IGI that can be looked at to check this?  Their parents were Charles and Arabella Newman (nee Smith).

I'm really hoping to confirm the exact relation between Lucy Newman and her family and my Newmans downunder.

Regards,
Amanda :)

Hi Amanda
You can track the family right back through most of the census's.
It does get quite complicated in the earlier census's. I am still trying to figure it out infact.
One of Lucy's sisters is named as a stepdaughter to a Susan Newman, who is also a widow and head of the household.
