59th regiment of infantry, help please (name added now :)
« on: Friday 05 January 07 18:04 GMT (UK) »
hiya

I was wondering if someone might have some knowledge to assist me in looking for my Gt gt grandad.

he enlisted into the 59th reg of infantry on 20 nov 1860 aged 19yrs 9mths, and was transfered to the Grenadier guards 31 jan 1864

I have looked and looked to find him on the 1861 census, (UK) but no avail, I'm assuming he would've been in training somewhere?

he made Corperal  on 14 april 1869, and married on 20 sept 1869 @ chapel royal tower of london.

he was deemed 'unfit for service' on 10 jan 1871 and discharged

I have him on the 1871 census, in Kirkby Nottmshire (but you wont find him, you have to look for his wife) is mistranscribed,
he dies on the 27th feb 1872 aged 31 yrs

sorry for longwinded 'story' but thought it might help

Julie

Hi,
A relative of mine was in the 59th Regiment of foot. He was born in Tipperary(were he enlisted) and married my GGGAunt in the North of Ireland in Co. Armagh. They had children born in Ireland North and South, Scotland, England  and Capetown S. Africa.  Their final child was born in Canada. All of their kids were born while he served in the army(except Canada although he had transferred to the canadian military). The reason in explaining all this is because the date you mentioned re the census 1861 is when they had a child born in SA. Could your ancestor have been in SA at this time too.

Hi Julie

I take it from the dates you have supplied that you have his service record. If so, can you post the dates saying when he was Home or elsewhere?

Hi aljepeka, and Ken.

I don't know IF he ever did serve abroad. The only papers I do have are his assetation ? ones. they don't give any places served. Just when he was in which reg't and when.

He enlisted into the 59th reg of infantry on 20 nov 1860 aged 19yrs 9mths, (at Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottm) and was transferred to the Grenadier Guards 31 Jan 1864. He remained a Private, Until.. 14th April 1869 When he became Corperal and retained that rank until his discharge on 10th Jan 1871.

I realise this is very vague, but it is all I have. I have searched the UK census in 1861 for him, but no avail.

Any idea's guys?

Julie

At the top of the back (?) page where it calculates his service. It should say 'Home' or give an overseas region. If not we can assume he did not leave home. However 'Home' included Ireland then. The earliest surviving census they have is 1901.

We really need www.regiments.org but they seem to be having problems.

You could try the Guards musuem. They may have a copy of his records. You will have to google them to get the details, I am at work.

Or go to Kew and look in WO97 or WO12 - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/
