Granma Ann, I have McIlwaines (Yup, I know its a different spelling, but I have found spelling  of names very creative at times !) in the Carrickfergus/Larne area  of Northern Ireland in my family tree on my maternal grandmothers side of the family- does that sound familiar to you?
Look forward to hearing from you if it sounds possible, regards Coral

I'm sure there are many more of us in the Southeast USA as well, I'm in South Florida - hey why don't you snowbirds come south and feel the warmth - in the 80's here again all week  :)

But seriously, distance in the USA is a problem, unless you are rpepared to travel.  For me the cost of getting to New York or Chicago or somewhere in the Carolinas or even Nashville is about the same, so is the travel time.  I think to have more people than you can count on one hand would require a travel commitment, especially if you wanted to meet up with people that you actually corresponded with on RC.

I can't commit for the next couple of months to travel up north, but maybe after that if we can sort something out - that would be great.
I am researching the following families:
Hurst / Payne - Leicestershire / Warwickshire / Worcestershire
Toon(e) - Leicestershire
Batchelor / Foster - Warwickshire / Northamptonshire
Hardy - Dorset

My web site has the family tree showing.  I am researching primarily the Payne, Hurst, Foster and Batchelor lines in the Midlands.

Off The Record With Debbie And Tony

Tony -

You are right about the travel distances here in the US. Maybe some place in the Mid Atlantic states to lessen travel on all.

Gr8!

I only listed the nearest states to me cause I figured that no one who is further away would be interested in traveling any farther.  Basically, ANYONE WHO IS A ROOTSCHATTER IS WELCOME TO COME. Even those of you on the other side of our great big pond!

Yeah!  Can I come please?   I promise not to bring the English weather  ;)

PM sent to coralc- thanks for the inquiry.

To all the rest of you- we who live here (North America) know just how big this country really is and how distances can hinder easy meeting up of all those interested. Those of us in the North- be it East, West, or Middle of the country, are well aware of travel conditions in the wrong season.  We show our patrience and common sense by waiting for the weather to almost cooperate. Many of us are willing to travel a day's distance just to get together. (It would be nice if you all could bring a tent and camp out in my back yard). There is nothing to stop any of you from organizing a small get together for your local region. In fact I can see that happening already.  Tony, it is a long day's drive for me to get to "South of the Border" - you know where that is, don't you? that would be the max for me unless I were planning on a 2-3 day vacation.

I'd still like to go ahead with our small NE meeting here in NY or nearby state.  I'm tentatively looking at April 21 or April 28 as suggested dates for meeting.  Saturday is probably the best day of the week for others, I'm good for any day of the week. Most exits off of the New York State Thruway have restaurants nearby or other places easy to meet. I'm good for any stop from Utica to Springfield, MA (all along I-90)  or I-87 from Glens Falls to Poughkeepsie. Those willing to meet in that area, please give me feedback or PM me.  You overseas folk will need to get in touch by PM for directions or other info- unless you are going south with some of the others- not that anyone can't attend any or all gather-ups.

I started this whole thing and I feel like a slacker as I haven't responded. I haven't gotten any notices of posts.  :(

I think the reality is we would have to do regional meet-ups. It's a big country.

I am so up for this and Granma Anne, I am happy to help coordinate a meet-up in the Northeast. I am in Central New York, near Syracuse, happy to do a bit of traveling. I want to make a research trip to Cohoes, so up for that. And carpooling could be an option.

Agnes1896,

I do love the city and if you ever go, I would be happy to meet you there and help with the archives and whatnot, if it worked out with my young kids. I will be down in February for a research trip and then a family trip in May. I too hate driving there though, and that's why I bring hubby along.  ;D

Yn9man,

I am from Watertown and am happy to help you with any research there if I can. What are your family names for there? Maybe I know some. The library is easily accessible and the newspaper has very user-friendly archive, along with some nice people who work there. Where in the Adirondacks will you do research? I was just up in St. Lawrence County in August doing some research in the courts and library there. I found some great stuff. I might be down to the DC area in April and would love to get to the National Archives, but I don't think that will happen this trip.

I hope this happen.

I'm here in California  but would love to join a Rootschat meet in NY.

Why, you ask?????

Well, Mr Indi's father's peeps were from  Elmira....and while I have uncovered a little bit of the history...I have a long way to go...and really need to visit the cemetery there.

I will keep my eye on this thread and see what we can do....although I have a trip to my hometown (Birmingham, England) planned in late March early April.....we still may be able to squeeze NY in.......

Indi....Have dead people - will travel!

Dang! this is getting fun!

Kath: Wondered if you got lost when falkryn split the topic.  I had fun finding it again. Cohoes is maybe twenty-thirty minutes from me via highway.

Indiapaleale: Nothing is cast in stone as to when we can meet.  KathMc and I happen to be a hop, skip and jump from each other.  I'd like us to be flexible enough to allow those who are a bit further away to consider making the trip. Elmira is a three hour drive and I could volunteer to head out to a cemetery to take photos or transcribe information for you with no problem as long as you were patient. Send me information by PM and I'll have a go at it for you.  Not that I want you to back out of coming for a visit. But, some advance information might be of help.

BTW: I have absolutely zero, nada, none, zilch reasons for doing research in New York or the USA. I am first generation here. The only US research I have needed to do is on my late husband's side of the family and another family member has done most of that  already. So when it comes to look-ups here I am at a loss. The local LDS FHC is the only place I have needed to go to do my own family research. Late husband's side is all from the south, Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, the Virginia's and Carolina's. Where I need help is from all of the  wonderful people on the other side of the pond and they have been not only gracious, but marvelous brick smashers!

Let's see.... That makes 2 in Georgia, 2 in North Carolina, and 1 in Florida, that I know of. Correct, so far?? I'd have thought there'd be more of us, somehow!

   Any more Southeast interest??
