What Happened to Sally RADFORD/LEVETT RADFORD
« on: Monday 01 January 07 10:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I've managed to tracemy GtxGtxGT Grandfather John Radford married to Charlotte Levett and some of their siblings but the above is such a puzzle Sally Radford Levett Radford as in IGI b1812 and christened 2 Feb 1812 in Denham nr Bury St Edmunds.
After that nothing and why such a peculiar name? She was'nt their first child, their marriage was 1804 and the other children were
!John1812
2 john 1815
3 William 1820
4Mary Ann 1819
5 Ellen 1821
If anyone can help me with any information or where else to search for this family especially Sally I would be very grateful
Thank You
Audrey

Sally is a pet form of Sarah, so from experience the more unusual baptised Sally can mutate back to the more common Sarah making her much more difficult to track. If she didn't use Levett as a middle name then you could be just looking for plain Sarah Radford. Daughters were attracted as servants to any of the big cities so they can be more difficult to track especially with potential marriages pre 1837. Have you checked on the 1851 census for any Sarahs or Sallys born circa 1812 giving Denham as a birthplace - presuming of course she survived childhood?

Without seeing the original baptism entry in the register I can't comment on the IGI transcription which may or may not be the quirk of the transcription and not problematic in the register itself.

Hello Valda
Thank you for the information.I dont have access to 1851 census so I will repost as a look-up request.
I also thought maybe she had died but I will look into Sarah as a possibility.
My direct descendant son William lived and died in Dalham and I've lots of details of his family who mostly stayed in Dalham,my gt Grandfather being an exception .He came to Sheffield and had his own dynasty here, but none of his family followed.
Anyway thank you for your help and suggestions

On the 1851 census there are no Sallys born within 5 years of a birth circa 1812 in Denham Suffolk (I believe there are two Denhams in Suffolk). There are 4 Sarahs.

Ipswich St Mary At The Tower  Suffolk
Sarah Cornell 42 Denham, Suffolk,  Wife
Sarah's husband was Philip I or J Cornell aged 42 born Norfolk, a chemist and druggist

Lambeth  Surrey
Sarah Ellison 38  Denham, Suffolk, Wife
Sarah's husband was John Ellison aged 38 a draper born in Yorkshire

Marlesford  Suffolk
Sarah Thurlow 40  Denham, Suffolk,  Wife
Sarah's husband was William Thurlow aged 38 a farmer born Dallinghoo Suffolk

Denham
Sarah Whatling 40  Denham, Suffolk,  Wife
Sarah's husband was John Whatling a 54 shoemaker and grocer born Horham Suffolk

The 1861 census has 6 Sarahs. Besides the 4 already mentioned are

Ousden  Suffolk
Sarah Day 47  Denham, Suffolk,  Wife
Sarah's husband was James Day 46 a farmer and miller born Bradley Suffolk. James probably had a different wife on the 1851 census in which case I'm not sure where and who this Sarah was in 1851.

Denham  Suffolk
Sarah Ashman 53  Denham, Suffolk,  Wife
Sarah's husband was James Ashman 55 an ag lab born Denham.
(Sarah was 35 in 1851 and born Dalham)

Hello ~

The name RADFORD appears most commonly in the area around Haverhill (so you could also check out villages in Essex and Cambridgeshire too).  I live in south Suffolk and when I drive via Haverhill to Cambridge I seem to be driving in and out of the three counties all along that road  :D

I have found that there was a family of Radford's in 1841 living in DALHAM - an ajoining parish to DENHAM.

Mother Charlotte is age 56 years living with children John 26, Mary Ann 22, Ellen 20 and son William ag 16.  They were all born in county (so that blows my theory of checking the adjacent counties  ::)

I cannot find a burial for a Sarah/Sally.  I think you will need to check the fiche of the parish record for the baptism as the IGI name reference does sound 'unusual' - do you know if it was an actual reference or a submitted reference?

Good luck with the search
Happy New Year.

SM ...

Every time I find an ancestor,
I have to find two more!

SUFFOLK - Pendle, Stygall, Pipe, Fruer, Bridges, Fisk, Bellamy, Sparham - all link to  Framlingham
DERBY - Bridges and Frost (originally Framlingham/Parham)
NOTTINGHAM - Lambert & Selby
BERKSHIRE/then Hammersmith LDN - Fulker
LDN/MDX - Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Marsden, Wilson, Sale

GGfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham London - moved to Boston USA 1889, what happened next?

Hello
The 1851 census material is "my" family, they moved and mostly stayed in Dalham thoughout the 19th century.
since I posted my query,I found a reference to Sally radford Levett Radford on Ancestry.com.A friend has looked this up and it is a Baptism for her in Denham 8 Jan1812.
The mystery remains as she was christened Sally and the early records dont show a Death
Thank you both for your input
