Ripponden
« on: Wednesday 27 December 06 16:12 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone please tell me which FHS Ripponden would come under?

I've been looking on the various FHS websites. I couldn't find it under Huddersfield and District so thought it might be Halifax, which - just to confuse me even further, which really wasn't necessary as I was already confused!!  :-\ - is itself under Calderdale FHS!!

I'm trying to track down some PR publications for Ripponden - if they exist!  :-[

Thanks for that, Pauline. Would that be your children by any chance!!  ;)

I still can't find any reference to any Ripponden PRs. Do you happen to know if this is just because they aren't yet available to buy - or is it a similar case to Almondbury and the Chapels of Ease, and perhaps I should be looking at Halifax PRs?

St Bartholomews is the only church actually in Ripponden. I've never looked to see what is available, since I'm a newcomer to the area.

What period/events are you after?

I've found a likely baptism on the IGI for a Mary Crawshaw, daughter of Thomas Crawshaw. It's in 1773 in Ripponden. She married in Almondbury but I haven't been able to find a baptism for her there. Infact, not many Crawshaws at all in Almondbury. Ripponden doesn't look to be far away on the map.

I thought I could try to trace her ancestors in Ripponden, but, if it's anything like Almondbury, you really need the baptism transcriptions which hopefully include the area where the baptism took place because, unless you're very lucky,  there always seems to be millions of people with the same surname - and no mother's name given!!

However, I've just found a possible marriage for her parents in nearby Elland in 1755 (Mary would have been one of their youngest children).

So now I'm really confused! Although I think Elland also comes under Calderdale FHS?

Yup, Elland is within Calderdale as well.

Elland-Ripponden was probably an easier trek than Ripponden to Halifax.
It's on the old Rochdale-Elland packhorse route, and within the Elland Chapelry.
I seem to recall that places to marry within the Halifax area were limited to Elland (St Mary?), Halifax (St John) Parish Church and somewhere over Hebden (St James?).

The local library reference section is closed until after new year.
I can't see what's there before then for you . Hubby is wanting to check out a few post-1837 marriages, so a trip is expected in the forseeable future.

Just to address the last point: The church somewhere over Hebden was Saint Thomas's Church at Heptonstall - Saint Thomas a Becket [until 1847 when it was virtually destroyed by a storm] and Saint Thomas the Apostle [from 1850].

Hi Jill

We meet again! ;)

I recently got the records for Baps/Marr/Burials at St Mary's, Elland (1558-1850) and there are quite a few CRAWSHAWs but Mary's baptism is not there.

The parent's marriage is there as you say -

15/05/1755

Thomas CRAWSHAW (weaver - Batch - marked - OTP) m Mary WHITELEY (Spin - unmarked - OTP)

Witnesses -
John WHITELEY and George HARPER

Looking for baptisms for Thomas there doesn't seem to be any that fit -

Thomas bap 1667
Thomas bap 1691
Thomas bap 1691
Thomas bap 1696
Thomas bap 1761

and then Mary WHITELEY - again...none fit -

Mary bap 1745
Mary bap 1747

Changing the spelling to WHITLEY -

Mary bap 1740
Mary bap 1741
Mary bap 1746

and then to WHITELY -

Mary bap 1743
Mary bap 1745
Mary bap 1748

not there - sorry...

Hi Claire,

Yes, here we are again - trying to find ancestors in West Yorkshire! I tell you, it's not for the faint hearted!!  ;)

So, it looks as though Mary Crawshaw's parents were Thomas Crawshaw and Mary Whitely (does this mean I'm distantly related to the late Richard Whitely?!! Oh no!!  ;D)

You'd think, if they married in Elland, one of them at least would have originated from there! I'm thinking that they both probably came from Ripponden, in view of what Pauline says about the choice of marriage places.

Could I ask, where you acquired the PRs for Elland - was it from the Calderdale FHS? Any idea where to get the Ripponden PRs?

Thanks everyone for your help.  ;D
