I just can't see a match  :( Wondering if she's hiding under a stepfather's name  :-\

Help, someone !!   :P :)  :)  :)

There is one Elizabeth Hayton born Maryport, daughter of Joseph and Sarah ... Not sure how we could tell if she's the one or not  :-\

I take it you don't have her marriage cert/s ?

Yes, I have a marriage cert :

8 Dec 1869, Parish church, Workington
John Whitaker 23, bachelor, labourer, resident in Workington, father William Whitaker (decd.) Stone mason;
Elizabeth Hayston 24, spinster -  resident in Workington, father John Hayston (decd.)  miner.

I also have her second marriage to John Clark, 11 April 1880, in Workington parish church, in which she is aged 35, widow, father John Hasting, collier.

In the 1871 census, Udale Street, Workington, Elizabeth aged 26 is recorded with John Whittacker [sic] and family, giving her place of birth as Little Clifton Cumberland.

The 1851 census entry that Liverpool Annie has suggested, also Udale Street, Workington, the entry appears -
Mary Hayston  head  widow, 39, farm labourer, born Cumberland Branthwaite
Isabella Hayston, dau, un, 22, charwoman,  do. Greysouthern
Maria Hayston, dau, -  10  -  do. Clifton
Jane Hayston, dau, - , 8, -  do. Greysouthern
Isabella Hayston, dau,  - , 6, -  do. Crop Barrow [sic]
Elenor Hayston, dau, -  , 4, -  do. Clifton
Matilda Hayston,dau, -  , 6 months, -  do. Workington.

Question:    How could Maria have two daughters both named Isabella - one born when she was about 18, abd the other when she was about 33 ?   Is the second Isabella an enumeration error - really my Elizabeth (b. about 1845)??
So why is the only birth entry I can find in 1843?

I have been encouraged, however, to find an 1869 map which shows 'Crossbarrow' within a stones-throw of Little Clifton - so this seems to be possible for Isabella/Elizabeth Hayston.

Any more thoughts would be much appreciated.

I have not been able to find any relevant record in the 1861 census for the Haystons - so any help here would also be welcomed, please.   :-\

Mike

It's just one big 'if'!!  ::)

Which begs the question, was Eleanor the Mother of Mary?

Nice job Emma ..... see I knew you would do it !! :)

Would Eleanor be Mary's mother-in-law ?? :-\

And why did all the boys disappear and leave all the girls in 1851 !!

I'm trying to think what was happening then !  :-\

Wow !!  Thanks to you all.

I'm astounded that you have made such a lot of progress in so little time ... I have been struggling with this for years!   :)

It all sounds very plausible - and I especially like the link with Fletcher Hayston bap 1832.   This is an unusual first name (possibly a surname link somewhere?) yet I know that Elizabeth Hayston and John Whittaker named one of their sons Joseph Fletcher Whittaker (b.1870), and in the 1881 census Elizabeth (re-married to John Clark) has a Fletcher Flood, nephew, aged 18, living with them.

I am convinced that the 1861 census Eliza Hastings, aged 16, born in Crossbarrow, is the same as Isabella Hayston, aged 6 in 1851 born in 'Crop Barrow'  .. and the same as my Elizabeth Hayston, born about 1843 in Little Clifton (near Crossbarrow).

I'm a bit confused about why Mary Hayston is a widow in 1851 - but appears to have more children in 1861....  :-\

... and where were all the male members of the family?  Perhaps they were mariners, away at sea or something - there was a lot of that around there??

Well, I have had plenty of answers for one day - even if they just raise more questions.

Many thanks for your help Emma, Geoff and Annie.

Annie -

I'm not at all sure about John Hastons death ...

but yes, I think she might have been Elizabeth Fletcher - and there are a number of possible baptisms on IGI which are around the right date and in the right area.

I just don't know which is right!
