Elizabeth Hayston - 1851 / 61 census
« on: Wednesday 27 December 06 13:57 GMT (UK) »
Please could I request a lookup in the 1851 and 1861 Cumberland census for Elizabeth Hayston (Haysting?) born about 1845.
She married John Whitaker in 1869 in Workington, spinster aged 24; her father was John Hayston (deceased), miner.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mike,

The one I can see is 10 years older  :P

Do you know her birthplace from later census returns?   ???

Hi Tati -

Please note my correction to this post: I am looking for 1851 and 1861 censuses, please.

In the 1871 census Elizabeth (nee Hayston), aged 26, is recorded with John Whittaker, aged 24, (surname spelt with 'tt' this time) and has a son William John, aged 3.   Her place of birth is given as Little Clifton, Cumberland (which is half-way between Workington and Cockermouth).

John Whittaker probably died in 1st qtr 1874, aged 26, and in 1880 she remarried to John Clark, a miller, in Workington.  They appear in the 1881 census, Workington, as Elizabeth Clark, 35, (place of birth given as Workington) and John Clark, 46, with children from her first marriage - William J Whittaker aged 12, George Whittaker aged 8 (my g.grandfather), and [Mary] Elizabeth Whittaker aged 4 (birth 1st qtr 1877 -  father unknown*).  They also have twins, Alfred and Louisa Clark, aged 2 months.

*[Mary] Elizabeth Whittaker's birth certificate in 1877 gives her mother as Elizabeth Whittaker formerly Hastings, at Union Workhouse, Cockermouth.

I am interested in finding Elizabeth Hayston / Hastings background.  I have found a BMD reference to a birth:  Elizabeth Hayston 1st qtr 1843, Cockermouth, 25/81 - but don't know if this is her.

Mike

I just can't see a match  :( Wondering if she's hiding under a stepfather's name  :-\

Help, someone !!   :P :)  :)  :)

There is one Elizabeth Hayton born Maryport, daughter of Joseph and Sarah ... Not sure how we could tell if she's the one or not  :-\

I take it you don't have her marriage cert/s ?

Elizabeth HAYSTON appears on the IGI as bap 3 May 1843, Great and Little Clifton, dau of Mary ...

I would guess there never was a John HAYSTON alive or dead.

Tati - I assumed from the first post that Mike had a marriage cert ;)

Not on the IGI ...

this on FreeBMD

Marriages Sep 1843
GRAVE    Ritson        Cockermouth    25   59
HALL    Mary Ann         Cockermouth    25   59
HAYSTON    Mary Ann         Cockermouth    25   59
LIGHTBODY    Hugh         Cockermouth    25   59
LISTER    William         Cockermouth    25   59
ROBINSON    Elizabeth         Cockermouth    25   59
ROCHFORD    Margaret         Cockermouth    25   59
ROCHFORD    Margaret         Cockermouth    25   59
WILKINSON    Henry         Cockermouth    25   59

I suspect this one married Hugh LIGHTBODY (mariner, away at sea in 1851?) ... as eldest child was 6 in 1851 ...no Elizabeth there though.

I suspect that Mary Ann is a different person anyway.
