Hi Tati -
Please note my correction to this post: I am looking for 1851 and 1861 censuses, please.
In the 1871 census Elizabeth (nee Hayston), aged 26, is recorded with John Whittaker, aged 24, (surname spelt with 'tt' this time) and has a son William John, aged 3. Her place of birth is given as Little Clifton, Cumberland (which is half-way between Workington and Cockermouth).
John Whittaker probably died in 1st qtr 1874, aged 26, and in 1880 she remarried to John Clark, a miller, in Workington. They appear in the 1881 census, Workington, as Elizabeth Clark, 35, (place of birth given as Workington) and John Clark, 46, with children from her first marriage - William J Whittaker aged 12, George Whittaker aged 8 (my g.grandfather), and [Mary] Elizabeth Whittaker aged 4 (birth 1st qtr 1877 - father unknown*). They also have twins, Alfred and Louisa Clark, aged 2 months.
*[Mary] Elizabeth Whittaker's birth certificate in 1877 gives her mother as Elizabeth Whittaker formerly Hastings, at Union Workhouse, Cockermouth.
I am interested in finding Elizabeth Hayston / Hastings background. I have found a BMD reference to a birth: Elizabeth Hayston 1st qtr 1843, Cockermouth, 25/81 - but don't know if this is her.
