John PIKE at Abingdon
« on: Tuesday 26 December 06 02:06 GMT (UK) »
Marry Christmas to all the Pike's oput there. :)

I have been searching for some time for the parents of John Pike born at Abingdon circa 1775. He was sent to Australia as a convict in 1797 and supposedly left a wife and family behind. I have a copy of the PR's around this area but nothing shows up. Where do I go from here? Any ideas?

Hi,

I don't know whether any of these belong to you.   The following are removal orders for various John Pikes and wife.

1785  John and Ann Chievely to Speen
1785 John and Ann Aldermaston to Eton
1788  John and Rachel Kingston Lisle to Childrey
1790 John and Martha Didcot to Kingston Lisle

Good luck

Thanks for your replies.

My John married Sarah Moss at South Hinksey in 1795 and lived in Abingdon, Berkshire/Oxfordshire up until 1797 when he was convicted and sent to Sydney Australia.

I have checked all of the PR around Abingdon for his birth/christening with no success. In 1797 he was listed as 21 years old, therfore he was born circa 1776.

Is there any other records that I can check that may give his birth/christening date and more importantly his parents names. I have a copy of the assizes report on his court case in 1797 which gives a lot of details, but does not mention his birth date or parents. Was there a newspaper in Abingdon in 1797 and if there was, how can I search it for a reference to John Pike? What other options are there available to me, remembering that I live in Sydney Australia.

Geography is fluid when it comes to the boundaries man places upon the ground. Abingdon was in Berkshire from before 1066 to 1974. Indeed it was the County Town for most of that period. In 1974 it was transferred to the administration of Oxfordshire County Council. So, to almost all intents and purposes it is now in Oxfordshire. However it remains in the Archdeaconry of Berkshire and its church records are deposited (those that are not still at the churches) at the Berkshire Record Office, which is also the archive for the Archdeaconry.

So, at the time of the events the post refers to Abingdon was in Berkshire.

There are two newspapers you can check - Jackson's Oxford Journal would be my first port of call as it is indexed for that period. The Centre for Oxfordshire Studies has the indexes and the paper on film. You will need someone to do this for you.

The second paper is The Reading Mercury and Oxford Gazette. Reading Local Studies Library has this on film, COS may have. As you have dates of the trial it shouldn't be difficult to find any reports. Other mentions would be difficult to find.

Neither is that likely to mention his parents.

Australian death certificates are supposed to be wonderful sources of information - does his not tell you anything?

Have you tried the OFHS christening index - incomplete, but a good way of checking a lot of parishes quickly.

Otherwise you can only continue checking PRs for an ever increasing distance from Abingdon.

I think you have other things linking him to Abingdon - if you don't then cast your net a lot wider. The assizes at Abingdon would try cases from all over Berkshire - he could have been from Hungerford, Windsor or anywhere in the county.
