Coldwell in Deepcar, Oughtibridge and Bradfield
« on: Monday 25 December 06 11:53 GMT (UK) »
I would welcome any information or suggestions of where to look next  from anyone regarding the Coldwell family in Deepcar pre 1850, the 1851 census has father John Coldwell as born Staffordshire in 1783, almost certainly a transcription mistake as it is also the son in laws birthplace. Both daughter Mary 1809  and James 1826 are born Deepcar in 1851 census returns. I believe an IGI marriage in 1807 in Bradfield of John Coldwell to Eleanor Wilcock may be the parents marriage. However there must have been other children between 1809  and 1826, but 1851census returns only give one possible other Coldwell born Deepcar in this period , a John Coldwell b. 1815 Deepcar. The 1851 census has the family in Oughtibridge.  I have found from 1851 onwards the Coldwell often becomes a Couldwell . I cannot trace any of these people with any certainty in the 1841 census.
                            Thanks    Richard

Hi Richard

I've seen something that may interest you - on the IGI there is another marriage of John Coldwell at Bradfield on 5/2/1816 to Mercy Wilcockson (surname too much of a coincidence (always so many variations!!) I think for it not to be the same John marrying a 2nd time, perhaps Eleanor died?).

Also on  IGI - children of John and Mercy, all bapt. at Bradfield

Martha - 17/2/1817
William - 1/10/1820
John - 1/6/1823
Mary Anne - 13/6/1824
John - 8/10/1826
Joseph and Mary - 19/7/1829
Elizabeth - 30/9/1832
Catharine - 26/4/1835
Margaret - 4/8/1837

Can't seem to find James though although the IGI is patchy - I think you'd be best if someone can check the actual Bradfield PR's!!

Regards, Graham

Hi again Richard

Also found bapt. for Mary 12/2/1809 at Bradfield, father John Coldwell, mothers name not given.
There is another Mary bapt.1809 at Penistone, father Jonn Couldwell mother Hannh Thickett - and quite a few bapt. at Penistone you've probably already seen this.

....And interestingly, on the 1841 census Bradfield parish Ref: HO107/1327/3

Living with George (occ. given as publican) and Fanny Thompson and family are:

John Coldwell,  55, Ag Lab
Marcy Coldwell, 45

But sadly, no sign of any of the Coldwell children

Let me know what you think.

Graham,
Yes, I had played around with the IGI  Coldwells :D
I think it's quite possible that the marriages of Benjamin 1798, and two Josephs in 1799 and 1805 in Bradfield are in some way tied to this family as the brothers of John, my main interest.
However it's very difficult to pin anything down from the IGI, particularly some  births including the Mary you mention that just give John as father with no mothers name but around the right time frame.
It's also unfortunate that the 1841 census doesn't clarify anything either, which is why I thought I would put it on here as you never know what Rootschat will turn up :)  The last time I did this the results were quite amazing

My next door neighbours are COLDWELL's and descended from ancestors in those area's.  However, being Christmas, sorry, but you will have to wait a few days before I can ask them about this.

Thanks for those.    The John I'm chasing could well be that John buried in Oughtibridge , however Mercy is listed in the 1851 as a widow at a different address to widower John, living with daughter Mary and son James, so I don't think these two are connected
