John McCARTHY - b Clonakilty
« on: Saturday 23 December 06 16:53 GMT (UK) »
John [aka Jack] McCarthy served in the highlanders & also in the Leinsters during WW1...he married Eliz LOSTY in about 1922 [Dublin?].

I think he was born in Clonakilty but he may have been born in Cork..I dont know the year...he had brothers called: Paddy, Callaghan & Daniel - no sisters. He died before I was born so I cant trace him.

Hello cathy,

There are a large number of people named McCarthy listed in  Guy's Postal Directory 1914 - Clonakilty.
The list includes a Daniel and a Patrick. BTW ... It's about thirty five mile from Clonakilty to Cork city.
It's interesting that one of John's brothers was called Callaghan. On the McCarthy and Leary page
of the Co. Kerry site there are a couple of Callaghan McCartys mentioned.

This link should help keep track of replies ... LOSTY family Dublin early 20th C

Hi Cathy, here are the census returns from 1911 for the family I think your looking for in case you never found them from Clonakilty. You mention John served in WW1,would you have any details about him,I'm currently researching soldiers and sailors from Clonakilty which is my home town and would appreciate any information you may have.
Kind regards
Brendan

Thank you, Brendan,  I have seen 1911.

My Grandad served in the Royal Munster Fuseliers [number: 6587] and then the Highland Light Infantry [number:64251].  His brother, Daniel McCarthy, also joined up.

The Medals we have for Jack are the Star Medal, Victory Medal & the British War Medal.  After the War he was treated at Leopardstown Park Hospital @ Blackrock, dublin for war injuries and received an army pension.  He had a limp for rest of life and was markedly facialy disfigured from burns.

Jack married Elizabeth Losty in 1923 in Dublin and they moved to Cork city & lived in Mahoney's Terrace off Dominic Street.   Elizabeth died young in 1938 in Cork and Jack died in 1956 in Dublin so I didnt know them.

Best wishes for your research

cathy

Hi Cathy, thank you kindly for that information.I did see the medal card for John McCarthy of the Munsters and Highlanders and wondered was it the right one.I do have a lot of snippets of information taken from the local paper at the time and must check and see if there is any mention of both your relatives.Information regarding the men and especially photographs have been quite scarce up to date.
Kind regards
Brendan

Hi Cathy,I found a mention for a John McCarthy of the Royal Munster Fusiliers in the Southern Star newspaper dated January 1st 1915 stating

"Private John McCarthy RMF is home on a few days leave from England,he was in several engagements including the battle of La Bassee and about three months ago he was invalided home having been shot in the leg.He is looking fit and well".

I can't confirm that it is that of your John McCarthy as it mentions no army number or address but the likely hood is that it is him,the only other two McCarthy's ever mentioned for Clonakilty other than this one lived five to six miles away.
Kind regards
Brendan
