Gibb Family - Looking for any info Please / New Update
« on: Saturday 23 December 06 00:34 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

My grandfathers brother married Elizabeth GIBB in Canada.  She was born in Fraserburgh in about 1888 to James GIBB and Mary MILL or MILNE.

I am looking for any information about this family as I know nothing.  The parents names and birth year come from the Marriage registration which took place in Toronto, Ontario in 1915.  Any census information would be appreciated as I am trying to see when Elizabeth immigrated to Canada and if she came with family or possibly alone.

Thank you,
Nancy

New Info:

Looks like Elizabeth had at least two brothers that also immigrated to Canada:

George Dick GIBB born about 1881 in Fraserburgh
James Reid GIBB born about 1890 in Aberdeen.

Both these brothers have MILNE listed as their mothers maiden name.

I hope this added information may be able to help pinpoint this family.

Thank you,
Nancy

Nancy
Hope you are still looking as it has been some time since your posting
From IGI I got James Gibb married Mary Milne 2 feb 1868 at Pitsligo Aberdeenshire. The 1881 census shows the family at 34 Brae Heads  Fraserburgh 196 en 1 page 24.
James Gibb 44 gen lab b King Edward
Mary wife 32 b Pitsilgo
Ann Ewan  d 13 scholar b Pitsligo
Margaret  d 11 scholar b Pitsligo
John George s 9 scholar b Pitsligo
Mary d 7 scholar b Pitslig
Alexander s 3  b Fraserburgh
George Dick s 6 mths  b Fraserburgh
If you check IGI you will get childrens birth dates.
IGI also shows that they had a James b 1875 but he died at 3 days also an Agnes b 1879 who is not with family at census .

1871 census Pitsilgo 233 en 2 page 16
James Gibb 38 shoe maker ( journ ) King Edward
Mary wife 23 Pitsligo
Ann d 3 King Edward
Margaret d 1 King Edward

1851 census shows James Gibb aged 17 an apprentice shoemaker living with a family called Cassie in King Edward 210 en 10 page 2

1841 census King Edward 210  Howe of Byth
James Gibb 60 army pensioner
Jean 65
Ann 35
Jean 10
Ann 8
James 7
John 5
all born Aberdeenshire  . Parents of children are John Gibb and Ann Birnie who married 6 sept 1829 in Pitsligo.
You will get childrens christening dates on IGI
From the 1841 census looks like John Gibb might be dead so I had a look at cemetery records

Peathill Aberdeenshire stone 129
John Gibb
John Gibb 5 may 1837
James Gibb 27 april 1861
Jane Thomson 11 aug 1862

Hi Kathy,

Thank you so much for the kind offer.  I am now trying to piece together the information from the 1881 census onward to Canada.  I suspect that only children emigrated to Canada but am not sure of this?

I will contact you if I run into another brick wall and possibly take you up on your generous offer.

Thank you so much for your time and effort.

Sincerely,
Nancy

Hi Kathy,

Thank you so much for the added details of the gravestone.  I really appreciate that.

I have also found the family on the 1891 and 1901 census so Elizabeth must have emigrated after that date.  She married my grandfathers brother in 1915 so, Thanks to you, I have cut down the search considerably.

I really do wish to thank you so much for all your effort.  You have outdone yourself.   :-*

Sincerely,
Nancy

Dear Nancy, The Gibbs were my ancestors - that is James Gibb Chelsea Pensioner and wife Jane Thompson were my 3rd gr grandparents . Jane's Parents were John Thompson  , also a soldier and her mother was Ann Cowie/Cuie of Rothiemay where they married (from memory 1775). James the Chelsea Pensioner was in the Napoleonic War and won 6 clasps( the equivalent of medals). I have their death certs and pics of their graves plus all of the OPR copies. Also John ( shoemaker's brother)and wife Charlotte Taylor and children are buried in Peathill also. Janet Thompson  and her three sisters were born in various towns in Banffshire. John, I think was chasing work in Milltowns. I think Ann Cowie?Cuie's father was John Cuie from Mayon in Banff near Cairnie by Huntly. There is a large castle there and I think he may have been a labourer there as that is all the buildings I could find.
