Death in India? Look up please.
« on: Thursday 21 December 06 18:16 GMT (UK) »
I have recently obtained the army records for my Gt Gt grandfather, and on it are the birth dates of his children born whilst he was in the army. One of the children is new to me, she was born whilst he was stationed in England but I cannot find her after that. I assume she went back to India when her parents returned with the regiment in Jan 1884.
Her name was Edith Mary Routh born 3rd March 1883. I would be grateful if anyone visiting the FRO can have a look in the overseas death records, as I assume she died in India.

Thank you

Well Annie,

The parents were Joseph and Kate Routh, he was a sargeant in the Manchester Regiment, they married in 1882 in Amritsar. They had 4 children whilst he was in the army; Edith 1883, Rose 1884, Joseph 1887 and Annie 1889, followed by 4 more known children after he left the army in 1892.

Happy holidays,

Hi RLucyG

According to the Index there is a Edith Marie Routh birth registered in Leeds in 1883 could this be your girl?

Wendi :)

Humm..... maybe not, as there a 7 year old Edith Routh living with parents John & Mary in Leeds on the 1891 Census ???

Hi Wendi

Joseph was stationed in England from late 1882 to early 1884, I guess his wife would have travelled with him so Edith could have been born in England. Joseph had family in Leeds, but I would have thought that his wife would be in quarters near him down south.

I had just assumed that from what you had said that she was born in England either way, you can check out the overseas index yourself, although they are pay to view (not too much) at http://www.findmypast.com
