Peter seems as elusive as James is in the censuses. Apart from the 1881 entry, he is not at home in 1891/1901.

I can't see more living children for Peter and Agnes other than James, Peter and Agnes....hoping to see an Elizabeth  :'(

Monica

Added: and Martha! big gap between Martha and James in the 1881 Census, would appear they lost a number of babies maybe?

That's right,  it could be that they were both working on ships..   What I've just found in 1881 census is Betsey Mclaren living at 19 Johnston Street,  Bootle, Lancashire..  aged 62 born Scotland.   This is the area or abouts James lived.  What do you think?

That looks like the mother to me  :D  She went by the name of Betsey in a number of the records. Firming up the family here Sue!

Betsey and daughter Mary were already in Liverpool by 1871 Census, Betsey shows as widowed:

Elizabeth McLaren    45
Mary McLaren    14

just got your latest message,

James and Susannah married 1870 cert doesn't say father deceased.  Peter and Agnes married 26 Feb 1871, before 1871 census, again doesn't say father deceased.  If this is the family means James their dad died between Feb and Apr 1871?

Will have a look now

Hi Monica

There is nothing under BMD during that time.

It surely has to be them.

Speak to you later

It might be worthwhile widening the death search for James between 1861-71. Just because MCs for the sons don't state deceased, as you know, not always a 100% accurate.

With that wider time span, these are the only two entries in the right area that I can see:

Deaths Sep 1862
McLaren    James         Chorlton    8c   258

Deaths Dec 1862
MCLAREN    James         Liverpool    8b   226

I've checked Scotland for the same period (61-71). Only one possible one in Dundee and it's not him.

Just gone back and checked my last posts, Betsey at least was still in Dundee up to March 1862 and the birth of their daughter Margaret there. So, the death entries, certainly in the first Qrt in 1862 unlikely to be James  :-\
