Problem with IPSWITCH WS_FTP
« on: Tuesday 19 December 06 16:53 GMT (UK) »
I have been using IPSWITCH WS_FTP for a couple of years to upload stuff from my computer to my host webspace.  The WS_FTP screen is usually divided into 2 halves: one for the source directory on my computer where the files are coming from, and one for the directory on the host webspace where the files are going to.  Suddenly, the window for my computer is blank and it only offers me a BLANK CONNECTION PANE which only allows me to send stuff from a remote connection to a remote connection.

Has anyone else experienced this?

How can I get things back the way they were?

Dolly

I also use WS_FTP.  Actually it's an old version - last time I tried to get the free one it wouldn't let me, but I digress...

I can understand why you don't get what you expect if your host has changed the file structure for your site, ie: the site is now in a different folder, but you should still see the correct files on your pc in the left pane.

Things I can think of trying....

You are connecting using the correct login right?  You didn't manage to login using a different setup, which is pointing you at the wrong folders?

Try browsing for the folders you want from your pc in the left panel.  Do you get anything at all?

Can you browse anything in the right pane?  Can you go up/down etc?

Who is your host?  Mine (POWWEB) a few months ago changed some settings and it could be that yours disabled ftp access to your folders or changed your ftp capabilities.  Do you have a control panel for your host that you can log into?  That might give you some answers about things they have changed, or they might have a forum where you can get answers also.

Let me know if this helps.
Good luck.
Yes it's frustrating isn't it.............

Thanks for your suggestions, Tony.

Absolutely nothing has changed either on my computer or at AOL which I use.  Thanks for your suggestions, Tony. The only unusual thing which happened in the 10 minutes or so between my using it successfully this morning and it getting screwed up this afternoon is that I accidentally opened 2 sessions of WS_FTP at the same time.

When I emailed IPSWITCH, all they said was [more or less]

Oh it does that now and again!

without any contrition or hints for fixing it.

However, in desperation, I un-installed and then re-installed the software and it is now back to normal.

I don't have the heart to open 2 sessions again just to see if that's the cause of my problem.

Panic over ... for now.

Well at least it's fixed... that's a good thing.
I used to use it with AOL - but that was a long time ago - I have moved on to my own domain(s) which is pretty cheap these days and gives you more flexibility if you need it.
Good luck  :)

My copy of WS_FTP has started doing what DollyH's did some time back.

I get 2 panes both offering to make me a REMOTE CONNECTION without any indication of how the [usual] left pane can be used to access the files on my local hard drive.

I did 2 re-installs, following DollyH's advice but it makes no difference and there seems no way of getting it to recognise a local folder

All in all, it looks like WS_FTP is yet another piece of C**P software which is OK when it's OK, but when it goes wrong the software and the company are hopeless.

Has anyone got any recommendations as to some alterative FREE software for uploading files ... and software which WORKS all the time?

Best wishes

Yes - FireFTP is a Firefox browser add-on, which means you need to have Firefox.  If your normal browser is Internet Explorer then don't worry you can have both browsers on your system.

I use the FTP facilities in Total Commander (shareware) but for all FTP queries on the RootsChat free webspace board, I recommend CoffeeCup (free)

Thanks for the advice.  I'll try these and dump WS_FTP
