Mary Feest/Feast/Feist
« on: Tuesday 19 December 06 08:09 GMT (UK) »
My several times Great Grandmother gave birth to a son William Feest in 1771 at Falmer, East Sussex (or thereabouts) . Can anyone find anything more about her. Did she have other Children? Where was she born and who were her parents ? She and William moved to the (now) Worthing area and he married  a Lucy Hart. I know most 19th & 20th century information

Hi

Is this a recording error or a transcription one, they appear to be the same person. I could not find any other children for them.

Many thanks. It appears that William Hobden (father) was not married to Mary Feest. William Feest aka William Hobden kept his mother's surname. All this I knew, but to date I cannot find who Mary's parents were, or for that matter William Hobden's parents either. My information is that he was born c1745, and Mary c1740.

There are other Mary Feest/Feasts of the 1700s but their birth years do not match

I had a quick look at the SMI for possible marriages for those names in Falmer.    None anywhere near for Hobden or Feest and variants except for a few Feest ones in Brighton.

Are these extracted records or LDS member submitted ones?  They sound like the latter so it is important to look at the original source.

I am not sure what you are talking about!! However  if you are talking about William Holden -it might be what in legal terms is called heresay.

I was assuming that genechaser had found these records on the www.familysearch.org site.  Their International Genealogical Index (IGI) is a first port of call for looking for pre 1837 baptism and marriages, though it must be emphasised that it is not full coverage and many parishes are not on it.  Within that there are "extracted" records, taken directly from the church register, and they are generally correct, and "member submitted" ones which are often a best guess by a member of the LDS church and must be verified at source.  They may be correct but often they are not.
Hope that makes it clearer!

Thanks for all that! I have, as far as I know, not had any contact with genechaser. My info has come from various family sources as far as the Feest side of things is concerned. If you are interested, and belong to Genes Reunited, all that I know is there. I will have a look at www.familysearch and see what comes up!!
