St Michael All Angels Church, Belgrave, does it still exist?
« on: Monday 18 December 06 11:28 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Does anyone know if St Michael All Angels Church, Belgrave is still about? I can't find anything on the web about it. A relative was married there in 1903. I suspect there will be other family events there as well.

Thanks,
Martyn

:) Thank you Mike, I'll have to have a look next time I come up to Leicester. If it has a churchyard I'll have to have a look to see if my GGgrandparents are there. I know my Ggrandparents are in the Belgrave Cemetery by the Red Hill roundabout but don't know if my GGgrandparents are there or at the Church. I guess the Churchyard filled, if there was one. The location makes sence as the family lived just around the corner on Leire Street at the time. They moved from Groby a few years before my GGgrandmother died.

Thanks again Mike.
All the best,
Martyn

Greeting's Again...... Martyn.....

I can not recall a graveyard within the grounds of the Church  :-\
More likely ...They maybe in Welford Road Cemetery which was used for most Churches within the City for the time scale you quoted

If you post some names I can check this out for you
I have Welford Road Cemetery burials 1849 ~ 90. ( Full transcriptions )

Hello Mike,

Thanks for the very kind offer but I think they may have been a bit too recent for your transcripts William Collier, my GGgrandfather died Q1 1910 and my GGgrandmother Ann Collier died during Q2 1900. But thank you for offering.

All the best,
Martyn

Thank you again Mike. I must admit I had not even considered Gilroes Cemetery but that sounds a quite likely option. I will have to look into that.

I am hoping to get some research into my Collier line done over the holidays as I have not paid them enough attention recently. I got carried away with other lines who had left more easily traced histories in the Railways and in the Army.

I have a the Colliers going back to 1740's in Groby and then there is an annoying gap to 1704 and then more Colliers (of various spellings) going back to 1656 at Thornton. As all the Thornton Collier lines disappear and the Groby ones appear in that period and the villages are not far apart I wonder (hope) they are descendants so I need to come up to visit the record office and the LFHS research center, I still haven't been to Pilot house yet.

I know people say that you should just work back and not try and prove a connection between two groups like this but I'm afraid having come across this other group when I lost the trail of what I know is my line I just can't resist!

All the best and thanks again,
Martyn

Hello Paul,

No need to say sorry I'm very grateful for you getting back on the subject. I guess if it's not a Church then a radio station is not a bad thing for it to be from a selfish point of view because it means that there are likely to be people there most of the time so if I have a few minutes during a visit to Leicester I can pop along and see what the place is like now. It may well have been completely rebuilt inside but worth a look especially as I would like to get a picture of Leire Street just around the corner where my family lived after my GG grandfather moved from Groby.

Thanks again,
Martyn
