Fresh Eyes Needed Please - 1871 Census lookup - Completed thank you
« on: Sunday 17 December 06 12:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I would love to find a Francis Best Harrison, born c 1828 in Ingham Lincolnshire, on the 1871 census, his occupation was a harness maker/saddler.

He was on the 1861 and 1881 as follows:

1861 - Hemswell, Lincs (RG9/2406, Folio 100, Page 16
Francis Best, Harrison, Head, M, 33, Collar & Harness Maker, Ingham Lincs
Sarah, Harrison, Wife, M, 38, Broughton Lincs

1881 - 8 Witherweeks Yd, Kingston-Upon-Hull (RG11/4769, Folio 86, Pge 7)
Francis B, Harrison, Head, M, 53, Harness Maker, Lincolnshire Ingham
Hannah, Harrison, Wife, M, 56, Lincolnshire Grimsby

Unfortunately on Ancestry, he was transcribed as Hamson on the 1861 and in 1881 he was transcribed as Ramison, birthplace Incham (thank goodness for familysearch.org)  :)

He lived in Hull until his death in 1910.  It is not known if he had any children, but I am sure he is connected with a brickwall I am trying to break down :D

He did not marry his wife Hannah that was with him on the 1881 census until 1882 - so I do not know his whereabouts between 1861 and 1881.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Frances,
I hope you don't mind me being cheeky ;)  But is it possible for you to look up a John Butler Harrison born c1827.  On the 1871 census he is living in Old Sleaford and has a birth place of Hull; but I have a feeling he is connected to Francis (all to do with the granddaughter he has living with him).
I cannot find him in any other census, he has the same occupation as Francis and as I can't find Francis in the 1871, I did wonder :-\  But no, I don't think they are one and the same.  Hopefully he was born in Ingham, not Hull :-X

Thanks, Kath

Hi Kath
I have searched under every combination of name I can think of for both Francis in 1871 and John in 1861/81, and can find neither. :-\  It's most odd that both of them are difficult to find on separate census years.

Do you know when Francis Best Harrison's wife Sarah died?
Was it inbetween census do you know?

Kind regards

Hi Su,
Thank you very much for spending time and effort in trying to find Francis and John, it is greatly appreciated.
I have no idea when Sarah died and there are loads of deaths for Sarah Harrison, and as I don't know when or where, I am leaving that one well alone!
Two days ago, I got his marriage cert to Hannah Whitlam (nee Baines) in 1882 and after lots of digging, amongst the misspellings/mistranscriptions etc, have found she is my missing link.  There are several pieces of this complicated jigsaw missing, but I cannot find this Hannah in the 1861 and 1871.  This John Butler Harrison and Hannah with granddaughter Mary Ann Noon in the 1871 intrigues me even more now, because of the granddaughter.  But the Hannah I am searching for was born in Grimsby not Selby :o
This is why the Mary Ann Noon is important:
1842 - Marriage between James Delisle and Hannah Baines, in Hull (www.yorkshirebmd.org)
1843 - Birth of Mary Jane Delisle
1848 - Marriage between John Whitlam and Hannah Baines, in Hull
1866 - Birth of Mary A Noon (www.freebmd.org)
1868 - Marriage between Thomas Noon and Mary Jane Delisle (father James Delisle, dec)
1871 - Mary Ann Noon (c1867), living with John Butler Harrison and Hannah in Sleaford, as granddaughter
1881 - Mary Ann Noon (c1867, living with Thomas and Mary J Noon as daughter
1882 - Marriage between Francis Best Harrison and Hannah Whitlam (widow), nee Baines.

I hope, I haven't bored you, this actually does get a lot more complicated, but as can be seen from above, Mary Ann Noon, is the granddaughter of Hannah.  I have hundreds of ideas, but I am keeping a very open mind on this one.

A very happy New Year to you,
Kath

Hi Kath
How complicated.  Is the Hannah living with John Butler Harrison on the 1871, the same Hannah Whitlam (nee Baines) who later marries Francis Best Harrison?
It seems so to me if she is the grandmother of Mary J Noon, unless she is her 'other' grandmother.

I'll keep looking on the census, they have to be there somewhere.

Kind regards

Hi Su,
Thank you again for your continued time and effort on this.  I am not sure, that this one is going to be cracked, though!
I have just sent off for the marriage cert in respect of Hannah and John Whitlam, I think I need to continue building a bigger picture, even if it costing a fortune in certificates!
Once again thanks for all your efforts.

Kind Regards,
Kath

Hi Su,
Thought I would let you know, I have received the marriage cert in respect of the marriage to John Whitlam, in 1848, at the same time, I sent for another marriage cert, I didn't expect it to be for the same Hannah, but oh my goodness it was :o

Hannah married again in 1860 to Ebenezer George Weeks, I am sure that John Whitlam was still alive and kicking and living in Lincolnshire in 1861.  Interestingly when Hannah married in 1882 to Francis Best Harrison, she called herself Whitlam (widow), rather than Weeks.

Thankfully because of the info, from this certificate, I have now found her on the 1861 census, living in Manchester with Ebenezer, which now leaves the only census, that I cannot find her in, is the 1871.

The more, I find out about this lady, the more questions I have, but it is fun trying to get the answers ;D

Kind regards,
Kath
