« on: Friday 15 December 06 21:17 GMT (UK) »
I am going to Dublin in March 07 to do some research on my family history at the national archives.I am a little unsure as what to expect- does anyone have any advice for me so the trip isn't wasted- i want to research the O'Brien's & Power's from Dungarvan & The Mc Cormack's & Mc Cabe's/ Mc Kababes from Cavan ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Bring a detailed map with you to check surrounding area. If you don't find a family in census, etc. records- try the nearby townlands.
Also, if possible  find what records are available before you leave home and list them- along with what information might be in those records.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

The National Library in Kildare Street, Dublin also holds the Parish Records on microfilm.  You can source the microfilm number for the various parish records (Births, Deaths and Marraiges) on line (search for National Library of Ireland on-line sorry cant get hold of the web address at the moment).  Work out the parish church for the area and you should have access to lots of info.

Hiya

Make sure you have lots of addresses that you need to look up clearly written out for the archives, as that is the main place for searching the 2 census.

Also if you are there early, there are a  limited number of the microfilm machines attached to printers, so if you get one, it is very handy to print out any records that you may find.

The library in Pearse street also has most up the bmd index records on micro film, up to 1950 or 55, where you can search the index then go round the corner to the gro to get them printed.

Hope this helps

Researching Barrett - Behan - Sinnott - Kirwan - Smith - Murphy - All So far from Dublin South City, Ireland. And recently Barrett from Kilbride Co Meath, a DMP member and his wife surname Devine
