Alfred Heaver, Westcott. Who shot him in 1901?
« on: Friday 15 December 06 18:36 GMT (UK) »
Alfred Heaver died on the 8th August 1901 at Holcombe Cottage, Wescott, Nr. Dorking. He was shot on his way to church.
I have found two pieces of information from the Wescott Local History Group Site; one reporting that he was shot by his son in law, the other, by his brother in law, neither giving his name.
From the pieces of info & with the aid of a Perpetual Calendar (what a wonderful tool for genealogists!) I have worked out that the date Alfred is likely to have been shot was Sunday 4 Aug 1901. An inquest was held on the 'following Tues) which would be the 6th or 13th Aug depending whether the reference is to  Alfred or his murderer (he shot himself)
Please, does anyone have access to old newspapers and could look up as to who shot him?
Alfred is the g.g.grandfather of my son in law.
With thanks in anticipation...

The Times, Monday, Aug 12, 1901; pg. 10; Issue 36531; col E
The Shooting Case Near Dorking - The inquest on the body of Mr. Alfred Heaver, of Dorking, who died of injuries recieved through being shot by James Young, his brother in law, who afterwards committed suicide, was held on Saturday.  The widow of Young stated that she did not know her husband could have had any real grievance towards her brother, who had always behaved well to them.  Mr Robert Scarr, of Herne-Hill, who was visiting the village, said that Mr Heaver told him that he took his sister's part against Young 20 years ago, and Young had never forgiven him.  Dr Hugh Blakeney stated that Mr Heaver said to him that Mr Young had taken him unawares.  The jury returned a verdict of 'willful murder' against Young, and expressed sympathy with the family.

The Times, Monday, Aug 05, 1901; pg. 6; Issue 36525; col D
Attempted Murder and Suicide - At Westcott, near Dorking, yesterday, as Mr A Heaver, one of the most respected residents in the village, was walking, with his wife, to attend service in the parish church, he was shot by a man, who drew a revolver from a bag which he was carrying.   Mr Heaver fell to the ground, and as he lay prostrate his assailant came up and discharged conents of the second barrel into his head.  The man then walked away, followed by some villagers who had been attracted to the spot by the sound of firearms, but before they could reach him he placed the revolver to his head and shot himself, death ensuing about an hour later.  He has been identified as Mr James Young, of Battersea, a brother-in-law of Mr Heaver's, and letters found on him show that he cherished some grievance, imaginary or other, against his relative, and he intended to be revenged.
According to later information, Mr Heaver has slightly rallied from the shock, but remains in dangerous condition.

I thought someone on Rootschat would come up trumps! Thank you very much Jorose finding the information for me.  My direct line is quite ordinary so it is fascinating dealing with a family like the Heavers!
Thank you again.

Hephzibah,
Today I received a copy of the Westcott Family History Annual Report 2006.  In it is a brief description of the shooting incident taken from the memoires, 'My Early Years' by Fred Dixon.  If you haven't already got this information I'll gladly pass it on to you.  The Heaver Murder was originally described in the 2000 Annual Report.

Thank you Jane for offering to send a copy of the 2006 Report but I  have already seen Fred Dixon's article.
With many thanks for thinking of me.

How strange. My great grand uncle Alfred Christian Garrick died at this property in 1904.
