Now bck to the task in hand, you can apply for a Photo copy of the information on the original register (its £6 while a cert is £11) give them as much info details of the birth, death or marriage as you can, i.e. full names, date and location of event, parent's names and occupations, mother's maiden names etc. the more information you give them the more chance they have of finding the records you are looking for.
The index and records are date based and are in a manual format so accurate dates would be ideal, or even correct year at least

so if you tell them 1877 for the marriage they will look the whole year, They have been known to look a year either side too
