Bolivian government minister abt 1900?
« on: Wednesday 13 December 06 15:08 GMT (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters,

This is a bit of a strange one, but I'll put it out there just in case.

My g-g-grandfather John Timbrell Milward Pierce (aka John Pierce-Hope), born in England in 1862, ended up for various complicated reasons living in Bolivia, and at some point between about 1895 and 1910 served as Minister for Public Works in the Bolivian government.  His service ended, according to a family reminiscence, because Bolivian law was changed so that only citizens of the country could occupy government office.

If anybody had any ideas as to how I can pin down the dates and details of his government appointment I'd be most grateful.

Anna :)

Hallo Anna, and welcome to Rootschat Ian.

You might have some luck searching "ministerio de obras publicas" which is Spanish for Ministry of Public Works.  I did a quick search for Bolivia and found an Ernesto V Pierce, but not John.

As an afterthought, law(s) translates as ley(es)

Hope this helps - but I don't know if it will!
Philip

There is an article that mentions him as 'interem Director of Public Works' in 1906.  It's a pdf file.  Search for:

"1905 Trafico Y Telegrafo En Bolivia"

"Los datos suministrados por el Director interino de Obras Públicas de Bolivia, señor Pierce Hope, bajo cuya dirección fué concluido el camino, muestran que lo recibido por el mes de enero de 1906 fueron sesenta y cuatro mil doscientos ochenta bolivianos."

Erato, you are brilliant!  I hadn't made that leap.  A good lead for Anna to tug.
