John Broadhurst Boothman
« on: Monday 11 December 06 06:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, I am looking for the birth record of my GGG Grandfather, John Broadhurst Boothman around 1780.   :)

I'm not sure where he was born, however he was tried at Lancaster 1802, pleaded guilty and transported to Australia for 7 years.  The ship he came to Australia was the HMS Calcutta in 1803.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Melbourne, Australia

Clarence, England then Australia from 1912.
Copeland, England.
Lascelles / Lovett / Stevens, England.
Langford, England (Reading and Southampton).
Kipp / Rigbye / Randall, Germany then Victoria, Australia from 1849.
Boothman / Clifford / Marsden / Johnston in Australia

I had a look in BVRI 2 and there is a John Boothman baptised 27 May 1781 in Downham Lancashire, parents John and Ann Boothman. This one is also on the IGI.  Nothing for John Broadhurst Boothman. I also checked the Lancashire OPC site http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/indexp.html but couldn't see any possibles there.

Thanks Retiringtype, I thought that perhaps his middle name 'Broadhurst" might be his mother's maiden name.

Well hoping  :) for something like that to confirm his ID.

Cheers, Kevin

According to this post on Genforum http://www.jenforum.org/cgi-bin/print.cgi?boothman::30.html your relative was arrested  in Deane (Bolton) and had been working as a clerk in nearby Horwich at the time.  I was going to suggest you contact the local history centre in Horwich to get more information on this but I've just seen his entry in the Australian Dictionary of National Biography http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A010117b.htm so I guess you already know quite a lot about him !

Thanks again Retiringtype, yes I have some information about John Broadhurst Boothman from the book "Convicts Unbound" by Marjorie Tipping (sent to me via rootsweb) and the Australian Dictionary of Biography.  Both are excellent.

What neither references give are his birth date accurately (only around 1779 or 1781) nor details of his trial.

From the other link, I also found in a Google search, I have no idea who Madeleine in Canberra is and no way of contacting her.  I have been in email contact with James Boothman in the UK, he couldn't offer any help either.

Cheers, Kevin

Thanks Dotty, each little bit helps, what I am looking for is his birth or christening record around 1780 and perhaps a transcript of his Trial in 1802.

I have one reference that said he pleaded guilty, so perhaps there was no trial as such.

There is also of reference from Lancashire Quarter Sessions
PETITIONS Manchester: Epiphany 1802 - ref. QSP/2463
FILE – Bill of costs of prosecution of John Boothman – ref.  QSP/2463/32 - date: c1802.

I'm assuming it's him.

cheers, Kevin

Kevin ,unfortunately there are no records of the actual trials kept at the Record Office.
What they do have are records of-
The Order Book- I have given you info from that
The bill of Prosecution- this will give you the total costs of the case,it will show the name of the person who has brought the case to court and sometimes the names of the witnesses [not very often,it usually says just the number and how many days they attended]
The Calender of Prisoners-this will more than likely give details of the offence.
I can look these up for you, but I am going to be out of action until the end of January due to going into hospital but if you will send me a personal message if you still want a look up then I will see what I can do.
They have a printed book of baptisms for Deane at the LRO up to1800 but there were no entries  at all for Boothman do you know his religion.
Another suggestion request a look up for Boothman  on the 1841 census for Lancashire and see what shows up,more than likely there would have been a relative lurking about and you could possible research those names they could be John's brothers or sisters
Another suggestion is to email Bolton archives they will be able to tell you if there were any loccal papers printed around that period.
I do on very odd occasions go to Bolton archives but again any further look ups will have to be next year now.

Hi Kevin
I am presently studying at Univ of Tas - Convict Legacy, and am researching John Broadhurst Boothman, who is the grandfather of Edward Westlake Boothman who married my ggAunt, Jane Browne, daughter of Jane Browne and Sister of my g grandmother Fanny Sarah Browne who married Henry John Heale.
I know he came out on the Calcutta in 1803, then VDL in 1804.  He married Mary Westlake daughter of N.I. convict, in 1810.  I've been able to find out a little about him, thru Australia Bio Dictionary, but apart from that I know little.
I would appreciate it if you were able to assist me in finding out further information, and if I can be of any assistance to you please ask.  Naturally I will share any information you may wish.
With thanks
Rae Alexander (Hunt)
