Emily Coole 1870
« on: Sunday 10 December 06 17:17 GMT (UK) »
Emily Coole, born Abersychan 1870, parents Alfred Coole (Bristol 1845) and Elizabeth (Hennessy?) (Bristol 1845).

I can find her in 1881 (St Mary Street, Bristol - with mother only) listed as COLE and in 1901 (6 Bethel Road, Bristol) married to John Lovell (Bristol 1868).

Can anyone find her in 1870 (age 1?) or 1891?  I believe they married in 1888 so she should be with John Lovell by then.

Is Monmouthshire in England or Wales - and has it always been so?

Thanks, cyberacct, I have found the marriage (I might send for the cert) but I'm trying to find some more census data.  I only have 1901 census for them married as I know he died in 1908.

Amazing - a fantastic job!  Not only John and Emily, but also John's brother Joseph and his wife Mary Ann AND Joseph's neice Florence Wheeler!

How did you find LORELL - do you use wild cards or dogged perseverance?

The sad thing is that I had found Joseph already - but not scrolled down the page after finding him at the top.

Thanks again

Peter

PS LORELL doesn't work for 1870!

To find John & Emily in the 1891 census, I left the last name blank and you can match up the spouses name with the location.  When I found it, I thought it might fit.

Found the marriage for Alfred Cool and Elizabeth Hennessy, marriage regristration quarter ending Dec-1864, District - Keynsham, County - Gloucestershire, volume 5c, page 1273.

I can't find a Coole family on the 1871 census but I can find this 'doppleganger' family.
Alfred was a cordwainer on the 1861 census in Bristol.

1871 census RG10 5333 folio 44
Bridge Street Abersychan Trevethin  Monmouthshire
Alfred Hughes 27 Bristol, Gloucestershire, Head Married Cordwainer
Elizabeth Hughes  27  Bristol, Gloucestershire,  Wife Married
Alfred Hughes 3  Trevethin, Monmouthshire, Wales Son
Emily Hughes 1 Trevethin, Monmouthshire, Wales Daughter

Regards

Valda

Valda,

This seems suspicious! I have:

Alfred Coole, 1845, Bristol (Cordwainer in Bristol in 1861)
Elizabeth, 1847, Bristol
Alfred, 1868, Abersychan
Emily, 1870, Abersychan

These dates, birth locations and Alfred's occupation seem to suggest they are the same family. I wonder whether there was some reason for them to give a false name?  By 1881 Alfred had died (although a daughter Bertha was born in 1878) and Elizabeth and the children were back in Bristol (listed as COLE).
