Hi Andrea,

I can't really be sure of his first name but his son is sure that he was Francis Richard Dawes born Dec 1899 - he did tell me the date but it's in an email somewhere  :-\

We don't know where abouts in Sussex although he did mention Craggwood but I've searced that with no joy.

I'm not having a lot of luck am I  :'(

You are kind spending time on this for me - thank you.

Where is Craggwood?
I think you need to go through all the births systematically and look for this one.   Widen your date range quite considerably.    Sort out what you know as fact.    When were his children born?    That might help to find his marriage in Canada.   When did he die?   Put a request on the Canada board to see if you can get a certificate and check his age then.    Famil memories are often wrong.   I know how old my Dad was when he died but I often get the year wrong!
Did Richard leave a will?   Does it mention his grandchildren?
Lots of avenues to explore but a search of the births is the first one.
Andrea

Hi jram
I have found a Frank Dawes born O/N/D 1898 in Cuckfield which is in Sussex.  The GRO no. 2b 146.  I looked in 1898/99 and 1900.
Hope this doesn't confuse the issue even more!!!!!

Hiya,

Thanks for taking the time to look for me.  I did see this Frank but I have the DOB from this persons son and the full name so I'm a bit loathed to send for the cert.

Hi Andrea,

That's really helpful as I know my Francis Dawes is the son of Francis Dawes.

Thank you.

You never said where Craggwood is.  That would help pin down the birth place.  I cannot find it.  Was it a house or a place?   You said you had checked it.

Hi Andrea,

My source thought it was a place in Sussex but after searching the net I never found it.  I did find a Craggwood in Leeds but my source is very vague with info - bless him.

I have emailed Brighton reg office for help!

I found out that this Francis Dawes was in the Highland Light Infantry of Canada.  I now suspect he was born elswhere but lived in Sussex for a few years as a young boy.  I'm sure it will all come clear in the end.

Hi All,

Sorry - it turns out that this Francis Richard Dawes may have been born in Scarborough.

I now have his emigration record that state his mother Eleanor lived in Felbridge, East Grinstead circa 1923.

Any information gratefully rec'd.

Thank you
