Birth Index 1899?
« on: Saturday 09 December 06 20:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I've searched Freebmd for a birth which does not appear.  I believe the details I have are correct.  Can you help please?

Francis Dawes born Dec Qtr 1899 Scarborough
Father is also Francis and was I believe a Professor of Music.

I would like the Vol & Page number to order his birth cert.

Regards,

PS
I have resolved this issue.  Francis Richard Dawes McKee.   I would love to hear from anyone connected.

As you have discovered FreeBMD is not full coverage.  All BMDs are free to search on ancestry.co.uk - choose the full version.   I have had a quick look and did not see him at that time.  Are you sure of the date and place?

Hi Andrea,

That was quick lol.  Thank you for looking.

The info I have is 2nd'hand but it's believed to be correct but you know how things come out of the woodwork in genee!

I know that this Francis Dawes is the Grandson of Richard Dawes, surgeon of Marylebone but his father Francis dissappears on census returns before he married.

I can't find him in the 1901 census either.  The only Francis Dawes in Sussex is in Seaford and is not a professor of music.  He has a son called Leslie F age 4.     Where have you got your information from?   Can you quote details from a marriage certificate or something?

I have now found Richard with son Francis Edward age 7 in 1871.  He was born in Hampstead.  However I agree that he is elusive on later census records!
Do you know who he married?

Hi Andrea,

My source is this persons son who is Canadian.  We have tried to search for his Grandfather Francis'  marriage and death with no luck.  This Francis married in Canada but we have no cert.

I found the Grandfather lodging in Hampshire as a single man on ? census but nothing since then.

I thought that the Grandfather probably went to Canada with his young family but apparently not as my source has letters etc about his father going "up" to London to visit his Grandmother on the train in 1906............! perhaps I'll try the telephone directories.

Something doesn't seem quite right but I'll keep plodding along.......oh the joys of genee lol.

Thanks again for your help - it is appreciated.

If you order the certificate from the local registry office rather than the GRO, then you don't need the GRO index number.  You would just give them the details you know (name, year and quarter) and try that.  If you want to avoid paying for the wrong certificate, then  you can add things like parents name, but only if you are really sure (otherwise they may not send you one that is otherwise right).

You would need to know the registration district though.  Sussex is an enormous county with a lot of local register offices!
Is it possible his first name was not Francis?    There are very few Dawes entries in Sussex.   I suspect the year is wrong - and to be sure of the quarter is unusual too as it may have been registered late.  When do you think his birthday was?
