FARMERY/SOUTH
« on: Friday 08 December 06 11:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to tie up some  loose ends here and hope somebody can help find some truth in a lot of lies that were told by my great grandparents, this query is just one of the lies that I have found they have told.

I found the marriage of James NUTT and Naomi SOUTH in 1887 where they were calling themselves widow and widower.

I have looked for the death of David SOUTH before 1887 and a marriage for James and the death of his wife but could find no trace of for any of these facts.

I then decided to see if I could find David on the 1881 census which I did, he was lodging in Grimsby with a family called FARMERY saying that he was unmarried.

Not sure why but I thought I would just look him up on the 1891 census and you guessed it he was alive and well married to his landlady Eliza.

So now did they both lie and both commit bigamy or did they divorce and Naomi lie saying she was a widow.

I have found the marriage of David SOUTH and Eliza FARMERY on BMD

Year of Registration: 1881
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
DISTRICT: Caistor
County: Lincolnshire

Could anybody possibly look there marriage up for me please to see if he said if he was a widower too

Helen

BIVRI2 has

David SOUTH (35, son of George) to Eliza FARMERY (30, dau of Thomas) at Gt Grimsby 7 April 1881.  This database does not normally indicate marital status.

There is a possible burial for Eliza SOUTH at Grimsby, 27 June 1895 age 47.

Divorce was almost an impossibility for ordinary people.  If they split up, they either lived in sin or married bigamously.

One of my lot flitted in and out of "marriage"-
1861 "Wife" of John VINE (while husband John DANN was in prison)
1871 Housekeeper to John VINE (Poulterer)
1881 "Wife" of John VINE
1887 Buried as Harriet Matilda DANN

Another ancestor of mine and his 2nd wife were both "widowed" in 1901.

Thank you for the information Geoff

I am finding the NUTT line a lot more fun to track down even if it is a lot harder then my CRACKLE line that I am, touch wood, finding a lot easier to trace.

Think the lies are making it more like a detective story
