MBE Wartime
« on: Thursday 07 December 06 09:16 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone give me any advice on how I could find my fathers regiment? He had a wartime MBE gained at Montecassino we think. We know he was there as a acting seargeant major. We dont know why or what he got it for. I know he was in France and in Egypt as well and that he must have gone into the army as he left UNI so was probably and officer. I was told that the MBE as a civil medal means that he wasd employed as intelligence. His name was Ralph George Bleach born in Sussex in 1916 on the 8th August. Father William Mother Florence Amelia. Any advice or help please have tried all sorts including Gazette. I know I need his army number but don't know how to get it.

Hi, my Gt Uncle was awarded the OBE in 1942 (he received it on 17 Nov 1942) for his work on German bomb fuses at the Air Ministry. He went on to receive the George Cross in 1946.
On the GC website, there is a question and answer section concerning civil awards and the subject of OBEs and MBEs comes up there.
For "How can I find out about a relative awarded the OBE or MBE?", they recommend firstly entering the name in the search engine at the London Gazette site http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk  (although this didn't bring up Uncle's ::) ) or else get in touch with the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood, St James Palace, London SW1A 1BH where all the records are kept.
I hope that is of help  :)
Fred

Hi again, I've just been looking on the Gazette site during lunch break and I found Ralph George Bleach becoming "Additional member of the Military Division of the said most excellent order" on 19/4/1945 (Supp to the London Gazette.) Page 2069.
He is recorded as Ralph George Bleach, No S/108236, Warrant Officer II,RASC, Ayr.
I hope that's of use, I also found my gt uncle after a bit of searching. :)
Fred

Excellent job Fred !!  :)  :) :)

catrenne ..... here's some padding information !!

The Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) was a very large corps which expanded
considerably during WWII with one or more units supporting each formation.

Its brief history is: The Military Train, from 1794 The Corps of Royal
Waggoners, from 1799 The Royal Wagon Corps, from 1802 The Royal Wagon
Train, later The Land Transport Corps formed in 1855, from 1856 The
Military Train, from 1870 The Control Department, from 1875 The Army
Service Corps and The Commissariat and Transport Department, from 1881 The
Commissariat and Transport Companies, from 1888 The Army Service Corps, in
1919 made The Royal Army Service Corps, in the 1960s renamed The Royal
Corps of Transport, from 1994 part of The Royal Logistics Corps.

The role of the RASC was principally the provision of 2nd line and 3rd line
(i.e. not unit vehicles) transport support (wheeled and afloat) to the
British Army. The RASC also had responsibility for the supply of
ammunition, petroleum, oils and lubricants, rations and water to formations
on operations. For some time, until the formation of the Army Catering
Corps in 1941, the RASC was also responsible for training army cooks.

Early in World War II, the RASC typically provided each infantry division
with one supply company, one petrol company, and one ammunition
company. Towards the end of the war, this was reorganised so that each of
the three brigades in a division had its own Supply and Transport Company
RASC. The RASC also provided bakery services, butchery, mobile bath and
laundry units at a divisional or corps level, and ambulance drivers for the
static and mobile units of the Royal Army Medical Corps. Some of the more
technical and supply functions were transferred to the Royal Army Ordnance
Corps during and after World War II.

Royal Logistic Corps Museum, Princess Royal Barracks, Deepcut, near
Camberley, Surrey, GU16 6RW, England. Phone: +44 (0)1252 340522. Fax: +44
(0)1252 340875. Offers uniforms, medals and trophies illustrate origins
and achievements of the five Corps which merged into the Royal Logistic
Corps in 1994 - the Royal Corps of Transport (formerly the Royal Army
Service Corps - RASC), Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC), the Postal and
Courier Services of the Royal Engineers, the Royal Pioneer Corps (RPC), the
Army Catering Corps (ACC) and parts of the Women's Royal Army Corps
(WRAC). The archives, consolidating several previous corps museums, does
hold some historical documents but little personnel information.

PS You might try for his Service Record now you have his service number !!  :) :)

There are recommendations for these awards in the National Archive. I have obtained several for wartime military awards of OBEs and MBEs.
