Bilston
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 20:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm trying to find out about an ancestor who came from Bilston. What churches were around Bilston in 1816? I'm trying to find his Baptism to no avail and I live 3 hours away from Stafford so can't keep going back and forth!
Are there any records online or anyway I could do it from this distance without travelling?
Thanks.

St Peter's is the Church also known as the Collegiate Church, in the Centre of Wolverhampton.  St Leonard's was not licenced for marriages so people from Bilston seem to have married in Wolverhampton or the other surrounding townships.

Checkout FREEREG, they already have a lot of Bilston and W'ton records online.

Thank you so much for posting all this Bilston info!  It enabled me to find an ellusive marriage record:  I now believe that the elusive widow Lydia CRUMMET who married John HUGHES in Tipton, Staffordshire in 1832, was the Lydia COOPER who married John CRUMPETT in Wolverhampton in 1820.  Yeah! "COOPER," a new surname for me!

Now, having examined lots of marriage records over a span of years in the 1820s in Wolverhampton St. Peter's, I have a question:  Every marriage record said both marriage parties were 'of this parish.'  Could they have all really lived there or was the parish so recorded because it was 'the parish' for marriages for people from Bilston and other locales?

My John HUGHES' census records say he was born in Bilston.  Lydia's census records say she was born in Brierly Hill.  But that's all I have to go on in the quest for their early records.    Thanks, again!!!

Cati,
In the 1841 census: she was 40-44
in the 1851 census: she was 48,
in the 1861 census: she was 60
I've been giving the most credence to the 1851 census, so I've been saying she was born about 1803, but it could certainly be closer to 1801ish.

Thank you for asking!

I've had a look in the Brierley Hill baptism registers from 1801 - 1810 and can't find a baptism for a Lydia Cooper in there.

Cati,
Thank you for looking! That was very nice of you and gives me a good start! Maybe I'll check a few of the earlier years and then move out to nearby parishes.  Thanks again, and especially for such quick replies!
