McTavish Family lookup
« on: Tuesday 05 December 06 16:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have been trying to search my ancestors in Scotland and have just hit a brick wall. I have found the marriage of Donald McTavish and Jane Taylor whom was married on 16 May 1841 in Sanquhar, Dumfries.

I have also found a census record for 1841 for a Donald (25), Jane (25) and Janet (6 months) McTavish.

The family emigrated to Australia on the Wanata in Oct 1852 with children Janet, John, Sarah and Duncan.

I really just wanted to get to the next step and find their parents. On Donald McTavish death cert it states that Duncan McTavish (Farmer) was his father but mother was not stated. On Jane McTavish (Taylor) death cert it states her mother's name as Janet and father looks like it was Adam (Brickmaker).

Any information that you could give me would be most beneficial and appreciated!

Thank You  :D

Ancestry's transcriptions will make us laugh and cry over the years. No idea where sangoken craig bridge is supposed to but there is this entry on IGI which is a possible for Jane, actual extracts from the OPRs:

JEAN TAYLOR  Christening:  02 SEP 1792  Errol, Perth, Scotland
Parents: Father: ADAM TAYLOR    Mother: JANET SCOT

One other sister shows:

AGNES TAYLOR  Christening: 17 MAY 1795 Errol, Perth, Scotland

And this couple's marriage:

JANET SCOT  Marriages:Spouse:     ADAM TAYLOR
Marriage:  10 AUG 1789  Errol, Perth, Scotland

There is also a possible entry for Donald on IGI:

DONALD MCTAVISH  Birth: 28 DEC 1813   Glassary, Argyll, Scotland
Parents: Father: DUNCAN MCTAVISH  Mother: CHRISTIAN SINCLAIR

Possible siblings from IGI:

1. MARY MCTAVISH  Birth: About 12 FEB 1809 Glassary, Argyll, Scotland
2. CATHARINE MCTAVISH Birth: 05 JUN 1820 Glassary, Argyll, Scotland
3. ANNE MCTAVISH Birth: 21 OCT 1811 Glassary, Argyll, Scotland

And submitted entries for these parents:

DUNCAN MCTAVISH  Birth: About 1783   Of Lochlan, Glassary, Argyll, Scotland
Marriages: Spouse:  CHRISTIAN SINCLAIR
Marriage:  20 FEB 1808

Monica you just solved a mystery for me with this post ;D I have been a bit confused about a GGG Grandfather who I have seen as Daniel in one place then a Donald popped up, I thought maybe he was a brother but it fits that his name has been interchanged. See what you can learn here, thanks for that :) Cheers Merideth

Many MacTavishes changed their names after "The Battle of Culloden 1745/46"
to "Thomson or Thompson" in order to disguise themselves and their former name.
Many Thomsons etc. are really MacTavishes. Google "Clan MacTavish" etc.

The family in the 1851 census appears to be the correct family.  I checked on the GROS site and read the image of teh censis page and Jean is was born at Craig's Bridge Sanquhar.

The family you found in 1841 is not the right one as Jane is shown as born in Argyll.  As has been mentioned Jean and Jane are interchangeable.
