Hendon Cemetery - 1939 burial COMPLETED
« on: Monday 04 December 06 22:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
Could anyone tell me whether it is an easy or difficult task to find out details of burial plots in Hendon Cemetery.  Has anyone dealt directly with the authorities there, and would have an idea about getting hold of information about the site and where I might look for my gt-uncle Ronald GURNER's grave of 1939?
Very best wishes,
keith
I pass the turning on my way to watch Arsenal, coming south from the A1M, and wondered whether it might be a vast area to navigate around, hoping to stumble across a particular grave!  Always a bit behind schedule for the kick-off, haven't so far popped in for a search...

Hi Keith,

I've not dealt with Hendon but have dealt with 2 other London cemeteries; I gave them the full name and date of death and they gave me the grave references......perhaps I was just lucky! One even sent,by snail mail, a plan with all the sections marked.

With a bit of luck Google might be able to find details of the authority for you.

Good luck,

Nanny Jan

I spent an hour wondering around Mill Hill Cemetary looking for my great grandmothers grave to no avail. I didn't want to do the same in Hendon so I phoned Hendon cemetary and spoke to a lovely lady who checked the records there and then for me and confirmed she was buried there, then pulled out a map of the cemetary for me when I arrived and told me exactly where the plot was. She was even able to tell me where my great grandfather had been scattered, and the gardener at the cemetary showed me which the rose bush where he had been scattered.

They are lovely, kind and helpful there, so my advise: just phone and ask!

Hope you find what you are looking for

Keith,

It's Barnet Borough Council that you need to contact.

Nanny Jan and Kate,
Thanks so much for these comments - I'm really encouraged by your own experiences, and will indeed contact Hendon Cemetery tomorrow...

Well, doesn't time fly!
I see that it was December 06 that I said I'd be phoning Hendon Cemetery the following day, and it hasn't been until this morning that I've done the deed.  Realised that we'd be passing close by today on our leisurely way to watch the Arsenal v Blackburn game tonight, but when I phoned the man on the other end of the phone he couldn't have been more helpful; he said if I could possibly give an indication of when we might be arriving he'd get the details of the location of the burial plot ready for me at the information'reception desk.
Got my camera batteries charged, and can't wait to set eyes on my gt-uncle's gravestone at last...

P.S.  Very impressed by Hendon Cemetery on Monday, very organised and friendly at reception.  They'd even provided a route of where to drive in the car to get to the correct grid section.  The only unfortunate thing was that my family had never put up a headstone to mark where my uncle rests, so just stood on the grass growing over his plot and took a few pictures of the location...
