This is quite a common name and unless you are really certain of the birth date, then you could easily follow the wrong lead.

Do you have his marriage certificate or his death certificate?  Either of those would give you both his parents' names, provided either event took place in Scotland.  They can be viewed online on pay per view basis at:

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

It doesn't have to cost a fortune if you follow the advice on searching.

There are two births registered in New Monkland for a James McLauchlan.
10 Jun 1859, parents John McLauchlan and Bridget McDonagh
1 Jul 1859, parents James McLauchlan and Margaret Gowdie Young.

From your first post on this thread, I thought you were looking for those because you didn't know them!

I've found a birth with these parents - see my previous post.

Confused  :-\

i dont know them nell,i only have names with a different spelling from ireland but i am considering all possibilitiesas far as the surname could have been changed as is the case in most surnames,as you quite rightly state without an exact birth date then you can follow the wrong leads, and even with a birth date you can still get it wrong as it wasnt uncommon for people to tell a lie on a marriage certificate as to what age they were
