My grandmother Ina Paterson nee Lee came from Pilot Square. I remember her being visited in Torry where she lived till her death by an Andra Morrice who came from one of the squares i take it he would be related to the Andrew Morrice in the o.p

Hi All! I have just stumbled across this site whilst googling Fittie as I try to piece together my family tree - I'm so glad to find so many of you who may be able to help!

My direct line is Walker, but also have the names Guyan, Masson, Baxter, Caie and a few other mixed in there, but all Harbour Pilots/whitefisher etc from Pilot Sq, North/South Sq etc.

I would love to hear from anyone who has info on these families and the Fittie area...I find it all v intriguing!!

:)

Hi zephyrcat,

Just the five surnames you mention represent about a third of all families in Fittee from 1841 to 1901, the Baxters being the largest in number throughout the period. Since well over 600 people lived in the Squares this equates to quite a few possibilities. Some families occur at the same address for generations, although there was a bit of movement within the squares and with marriages between members of different families.

It certainly is an interesting community!

BumblebeeBev and I have been working together for some time trying to unravel our Ancestors in Fittie.
We have Main, Guyan, Baxter and Morrice.  As many of the families seem to marry within the Squares and use the same family names over and over as we are sure many of you have already found it is increasingly difficult to work out who belongs to who.

Would any of you be interested in joining us in trying to unravel it all – pull everything we have together and see if we can make sense of them all?

We have created a group on facebook and will be posting out certs etc and hope you will join in.

A telescope either belonging to or made by a Caie from Fittie turned up in an auction I was at recently. I may have a note of the address in the inscription somewhere, I'll check later if anyone's interested.

Hello all. I'm Kevin Baxter. My family hale from 2 South Square, where they lived until the 1970's. My Grandma and Grandad, were Harriet (nee Stephen) and David (trawler skipper). My Dad, William (Billy), now 76, was a ship's joiner, at Hall Russell's. Also have Mackie and McRobb in our recent family tree. To my knowledge, there are now lots of little and not so little Baxters', to keep the heritage going. I know my cousins each have children, while I'm lucky enough to have three bonnie loon's and quines, as nieces and nephews, Harriet (13), William (9) and Olivia (5).

Welcome Kevin,

There was an Alexander Baxter b c. 1773 at 2 South Square in the 1851 census & Baxters at the same address at least until 1901.

best
Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,

Thanks for the swift response and info.
My dad will be chuffed and amazed to hear that the lineage
at 2 South Square goes back to 1770.
I know my Grandma, Harriet Baxter (nee Stephen) lived there until 1977
Will need to research some of the older census reports,
to fill in the gaps. Got back to 1821 with one Baxter family tree branch.
