Hi Jeff and a warm Hogmanay welcome to Rootschat

You will get a better response to your query if you start a new thread with 'John Maynard King' as the subject.
If you are unsure of which county he's from, go to the Scotland General board and click new topic. (maybe one of our nice moderators will move the post for you!)

I've only been here a short while and have already had lots of useful help - hope you find the same.

Regards

H there,

I'm interested in contacting anyone who has information regarding/family connections to the white fisherman and harbour pilots of Footdee, Aberdeen from 1800 - present. My father's family lived in North Square, Footdee for over a century.

My research goes back to Anthony (b.1817) and Jessie Baxter (b. 1821 nee Allan) who lived at 17 North Square, and whose son John (b.1847) married Elizabeth Fowler (b.1847), who lived with her parents Alexander and Elizabeth (nee Robertson) at 15 North Square.  Anthony is registered as a white fisher in the 1851 and 61 census' and as a harbour pilot on his son's wedding certificate. Alexander Fowler was also a harbour pilot in Footdee.

John and Elizabeth's son, William Baxter (b. 1879) married Margaret Allan (b. 1874) in 1904. Margaret's parents were Andrew (b.1836) and Margaret Allan (b. 1839, nee Allan - strange!) Andrew's parents were Andrew (b.1801)  and Agnes Allen (b.1809, nee Caie) and Margaret's were Andrew (b.1810) and Ann Allan (b.1803, nee Morrice)

All these generations lived at South Square or North Square in Footdee, and worked either as white fishers or as harbou pilots.

Just wanted to see if anyone else was researching these families or those with the names Guyan or Main, as these families appear to have lived alongside mine for generations.

Kate

Hi Scarlettkate,

My 2 x Great Grandfather James Ritchie aged 22 yrs from Prestonpans East Lothian, married Isabella Fowler , 20 from 15 South Square, Footdee. Her father was Alexander, a pilot and mother was deceased by date of marriage, Isabella Robertson. The witnesses were John Allan and William Fowler. I have the Marriage certificate from SP, and will send you a copy. Quite a few similarities, except Alexanders wife, Elizabth against Isabella, could be different generations or relatives.

Hi Scarlettkate,

Problem solved with different names of Alexander's wives, he had 2.
His first wife Isabella died 29 Oct 1854 he then married Elizabeth Allan on 22 Mar 1856. He had 6 children to Isabella and 5 to Elizabeth, he was married to Elizabeth at 15 South Square, Footdee.

Hi Kate,

I am researching my MAIN family line and have a possible marriage between John Main and Ann Guyan married 1820.   They are listed as being at  North Square.

Hi Kate,

On the LDS site, the marriage was on 19 July 1820, at Saint Nicholas Blotter And Scroll, Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland. The names were John Main and Ann Guyon, whose father was Alexander Guyon. They  had  5 of a family christened at St Nicholas, from 1821 to 1832.

I have found no details of North Square, unfortunately.

Hi Kate

I can see it's a while since you posted this but I've just started researching my family and whilst googling Footdee I found your qstn - I think we may have some links!!!

my Gt. Gt. Gt. grandma was Jessie Baxter (who married Edward Forbes) Jessies parents were Janet Caie & Alexander Baxter who married in 1838. On the marriage notes it says Jessies father John Caie and Alexander Baxter were Harbour pilots at Footdee

what do you think?!

forgot to say - Edward Forbes lived at 12 South Sq when he married Jessie Baxter in 1867 and it says his father William Forbes (deceased) was a whitefisher.
Jessie Baxter lived at 1 Pilot Square and her father Alexander was a harbour pilot

Hi, I was just doing a bit of googling while having lunch and came across this thread.

My wife's family descends from John Slater Walker of Footdee who immigrated to Canada around 1900. He was born at 1 North Pier Road. There are a number of Guyans in the family tree, and some Mains as well (she is also descended from the Mains from Glasgow).

I'm happy to share what I have.
