Baxters of South Square, Footdee
« on: Monday 04 December 06 21:15 GMT (UK) »
H there,

I'm interested in contacting anyone who has information regarding/family connections to the white fisherman and harbour pilots of Footdee, Aberdeen from 1800 - present. My father's family lived in North Square, Footdee for over a century.

My research goes back to Anthony (b.1817) and Jessie Baxter (b. 1821 nee Allan) who lived at 17 North Square, and whose son John (b.1847) married Elizabeth Fowler (b.1847), who lived with her parents Alexander and Elizabeth (nee Robertson) at 15 North Square.  Anthony is registered as a white fisher in the 1851 and 61 census' and as a harbour pilot on his son's wedding certificate. Alexander Fowler was also a harbour pilot in Footdee.

John and Elizabeth's son, William Baxter (b. 1879) married Margaret Allan (b. 1874) in 1904. Margaret's parents were Andrew (b.1836) and Margaret Allan (b. 1839, nee Allan - strange!) Andrew's parents were Andrew (b.1801)  and Agnes Allen (b.1809, nee Caie) and Margaret's were Andrew (b.1810) and Ann Allan (b.1803, nee Morrice)

All these generations lived at South Square or North Square in Footdee, and worked either as white fishers or as harbou pilots.

Just wanted to see if anyone else was researching these families or those with the names Guyan or Main, as these families appear to have lived alongside mine for generations.

Hi Kate

My family are descended from Anthony Baxter's brother, John, who married Agnes Morrice in 1840.

I discovered a slightly spooky coincidence when researching my strand of the family. Anthony's son, also called Anthony, died from smallpox on the 23 April 1872. His cousin Jane (John's daughter) also died from smallpox ... on the same day!

The fisher families of Footdee make a fascinating study - they are quite self contained, follow similar professions through each generation, and intermarry to such a degree that teasing out the individual families is quite a challenge.

I have quite a number of BMD and census records I'd be happy to share with you. I'll send you a PM with details. I share many of the same surnames in my tree so I'm sure we interconnect in other ways too!

In the meantime, the MI inscription booklet for St Clement's churchyard is invaluable for Fittie families. It's available from www.anesfhs.org.uk.
Also www.geocities.com/SoHo/Workshop/2299/pilots.html has listings of Aberdeen Harbour pilots with the same family names appearing year after year.

Cheers

Thanks for the welcome joebhoy!

I only joined yesterday but I've already found two connections to my family trees.

I live in Aberdeenshire so I hope I can help out with some local knowledge now and again.

Cheers

Thanks very much for your post Gary!

I'll contact you by email very shortly as I'm very interested to see what information you may have. That strange co-incidence is indeed very spooky!

Merry Xmas and a happy new year,

I did some research for a friend whose gran's brother Alexr McMillan married a Jessie Wyness in 1923.   She was desc from Baxters/Guyans and I've got a "fair few" certs etc!
I've got the St Clements MI booklet and also St Clements Parish booklet by Rosemary Baxter which gives a bit of detail about The Squares.
I'm likely not to be online much over next few days but happy to share what I've found out. :)

Gary, Welcome to Rootschat  :) I wondered if you've seen the entry for Anthony's death at the Smallpox Hospital in Aberdeen. Click on 1872 then go to page 10

Hi Elaine

Yes, I'd seen that site. I love the 'Result' column - Cured or Dead!

It's a pity that SCAN site hasn't developed it's online records, but I guess it's role is to be a catalogue of what's held elsewhere.

Hello:

This is my first time, and I am not certain I am even in the correct area.
I am looking for some information for the following people:

John Maynard King, Born in Scotland in 1853 & his Wife Mildred Captola Hadlock, Born 1859. I know that they had a son whose name was John Maynard King, also. He was born 01-16-1887. Any information about either of them would be helpful.

Thanks.
