Search for Dorothy Lines

Hi,

I am trying to find records for my great grandmother - Dorothy Lines - who was born on 6 April in we believe 1893. I have also been led to believe she was born in Aldershot, Hampshire, although this may be wrong. Her father was William Lines, whom I have little information on except that he was deceased when she married in 1920.

She married John Jackson Woodburn on 22 Sept 1920 at the Holy Trinity Church in Aldershot and had three children - Stanley (1921) , Lou (1922) and Dorothy (1924).

I am trying to find a birth record for her, and also census information from 1901, so I can trace her mother and her father's family. Nothing seems to correlate on Ancestry!

Can anyone help?

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

I agree that there doesn't seem to be a Dorothy of the right age with a father William on the 1901 census.

A couple of things: William might have died 1893 - 1901.  Was there a military connection?  Maybe the family were abroad in 1901?  Do you know the names of any siblings?

Who were the witnesses to the marriage - maybe their names can help.

It is entirely possible that William could have died before 1901. I don't know about any siblings, although there may have been a brother called William. As for military connections, I have considered this. John Jackson is a bombadier who was living in Lille Barracks when they married, so she may have travelled around with her father if he too was in the army. It may be why/how she met John.

I don't know how to go about tracing military records to check this possibility. Can anyone help me with this?

It also frustrates me that I cannot find a birth record for her, although she could have been born abroad if her father was in the army?

There are a few Dorothy Lines born within a few years of your supposed birth date (is this from her marriage cert or death cert?) but either in the wrong place or with the wrong father!

i suppose it is possible her mother had remarried & she is using a new name.

There is one in St Pancras in 1901 with father & brother both William. RG13/145/108/20.

You can ask about military matters on the Armed Forces board.  The only problem is that you have so little to go on at the moment.

Do you have her death cert?

Funny you should ask that!!

She died in Canada in on 5th Oct 1965 whilst visiting her son Stan, who had emigrated there. Because she died overseas, and records of these deaths for 'commoners' only start to be registered in 1966 I am at a loss! My mum and I are trying to go through things at my grandparents to see if we can find a birth/death certificate but so far no luck!

Her year of birth is derived from her marriage certificate, which states she was 27 when she married in 1920.
