Goggin - Whiddy Island
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 19:02 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone know where I might find any records for Whiddy Island.   I am looking for a Maurice Goggin married to Mary Cronin.  They had at least four children I know of who were all born in the 1840's, Maurice, Edward, Annie & Catherine.  They all immigrated to Boston, MA in the early 1870's.

Whiddy Island is off the coast of Bantry in the Parish of Kilmocomoge.

Thanks,

Margie

Hello Margie,

Bantry Church may be a good place to start. You'll have to rely on Church records as your ancestors were born before Civil Registration was introduced in Ireland. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMs started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

The Island was a navy base at one stage as well as being an army base for a few years in the early 1800s and an American seaplane base in 1918.

Hi Margie,

I have interest in Maurice Goggin as the Goggins lived on Whiddy adjacent to the Dennis family.  I am looking for any connections between the two.  Do you have anything to share?

I am not sure if there is any connection with the Goggin/Dennis family but this is what I have.

My GGrandfather was Edward Goggin born to Maurice Goggin and Mary Cronin (Croneen) on
10/4/1844 and baptized 10/14/1844.  His sponsors were Timy Driscoll and Margaret Dennis.  I
do not know if Maurice or Mary Cronin Goggin were related to the sponsors but I have heard that
it was bad luck to choose any sponsor unless it was a relative.  I will look further and see if I can
find a connection.  My ggrandfather came to Boston Massachusetts in the late 1860's and died
   hear as well.

Margie,

Maurice Goggin married Margaret Dennis on Jan 27, 1852 per the records at St Finbars Church in Bantry.  Margaret was born in 1821 and Maurice in 1820.  Both Margaret and Maurice appear in the 1901 census living at house 10 Trawnahaha on Whiddy Island.  Margaret appears in the 1911 census a widow.

In 1867 a (different) Maurice Goggin age 68 died March 22.  He was a boatman who died of pleurisy.  Mary Goggin (probably his wife Mary Cronin) was present as his death.

I wish that was my Maurice Goggin but it is not.  After Mary Cronin died my ggrandfather Edward Goggin went back and brought my Maurice back to Boston MA.  On Maurices death certificate in 1889 it states that his parents were Maurice & Catherine.  There were a few Maurices on Whiddy Island.  Mine came from Gurragh.  I think they were all related!!!!!

Margie

Any idea what Catherine's maiden name was?  The Dennis family came from Gurraghy and James Dennis shared land leases with Maurice Goggin.  This information comes from Griffiths Valuations.

I have no idea what Catherines last name is.  I am sure you are aware of the Cork parish info on line.  I have also entered the last name of "cogan" to get info on my family.  If you find any connection to our family, I would love knowing.
