Thanks Joe.  This is very useful and I hadn't picked up on that before. I'm surprised I hadn't looked at 1851 before now, but I now remember my details came from typed records in the family history library on one of my visits back to the old country.  I had assumed Cecelia had died as I hadn't considered divorce as an option back then.  He must have been a bit of a lad, I think.

Hi Joe.  I'm not finding Alexander's 1851 census record through Scotland's People.  Looked for Helen also. I wonder why that would be.

Hi Joe.  I've tried all computations in the 1851 census. He doesn't even appear when I just put in the surname and Greenock.  I tried Helen McKirdy and Helen Lamont - nothing.  Is a mystery.  I think I'll put the question to Scotland's People.

Joe.  It looks like Scotland's People is still working on the 1851 census.  That might explain why I can't find them.  I'll try again later.

I'm embarrassed that I'm only getting back to this now.  My family tree has been on hold for some time.  However, I'm hoping that some of you who tried to help will have another look at it.  Alexander McKirdy, my gg grandfather was born 1807,d 1871 in Greenock.  His parents are shown as Alexander McKirdy and Mary McMillan on his birth notice and his death notice.  However, I've never found anything on his parents.  No marriage and no deaths.  I did find a birth in the Catholic Church to Alexander McCurdy and Mary McMullan which could be them as the names can be interchangeable when you have a large Irish population (or an Irish priest).  Alex was married twice -  to Helen Lamont and to Elizabeth McGilvray (my ancestor) (in the catholic church).  I had originally thought that Cecilia Black was a first marriage, but when I found her death record she was shown as "the widow of Alexander McKirdy" which rules her out as he had two later marriages  Would welcome any ideas from you creative thinkers out there.  Sheena

It wasn't really an option as the expense involved put it out of reach of the majority of the population.

It is far more likely that Cecilia had died.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
