Any advice/help needeed for an 1881 census look up FARREL
« on: Friday 01 December 06 22:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have come to a nasty dead end (1882) trying to find my Gr Gr Grandmother Ann Elizabeth Farrel and would appeciate any help or advice that anyone cane give me, because I'm begining to think that she is a figment of imagination.
All the information that I have on her is after her marriage to John Bilson in 1882 details from her marriage certificate are:
Married January 8th 1882 Parish Church Sheffield
John Bilson age 26 occupation Roller address Lord Street Sheffield father John Bilson
Ann Elizabeth Farrel age 19, address Charlotte Street Sheffield: Father Joseph Farrel deceased bricklayer.
I can't seem to find her on the 1881 census and she married in Sheffield January 1882.
On the 1891 Census she is living with her husband John Bilson (Bilston on Census) at 63 Duke Street Sheffield she gives her age as 26 and place of birth as  Durham Darlington. On the 1901 Census she age 36 and is living with her husband and children at 34 Leicester Street Sheffield and gives her place of birth as Sheffield.
Any help on trying to find where she was in 1881 would be greatly appreciated.
Best Wishes
Rhial

Her husbands age is all over the place 54 on 91 and 45 on 1901.Could she be a servant to him before they married.Have you a birth or marriage cert.As she is just Elizabeth on both 91 and 1901 census. Were have you got Farrel from?Sorry just reread your message and the details are there.

Had a look through 81 and 71 in case her dads alive on 71 but cant see anything that fits.Theres a Joseph who is a dyer on 71.Will look at 61 .Maybe with more info from 61 we can find her in 81

No cant find anything about Ann Elizabeth or Joseph.

The possibilities for mis- spelling or mistranscribing Farrel are endless.  Have you tried searching for Ann Far*  or even all the Anns/Elizabeths born in that year in either of the places to see whether there is an obvious error?
Who are the witnesses to the marriage?   They often hold vital clues.  Have you got a birth certificate for one of her children?  Does that confirm the spelling of her maiden name?

Hi thank you for the replies.
The witnesses on the marriage certifiacte for Ann Elizabeth Farrel and John Bilson are either John and Jane Wilson or John and Jane Nelson as the writing is difficult to read.  The birth certificate of her daughter Violet Agnes born August 1895 36 River lane Sheffield, states: Mother Elizabeth Bilson formerly Farrell.
best wishes

I have spent a happy hour on this and got nowhere!   Sorry.  I think you need to search all the births and note every possible one for Ann Elizabeth Farrell/Farrel/Farroll etc.     In either Darlington or Sheffield - assuming one is right.  I favour the Darlington one only because it is specific whereas Sheffield could be the enumerator just ticking boxes.    Her age on the census is probably correct - ie born around 1863/4/5.
The births are free to search on ancestry - choose the full version.   There is also a link to Durham BMDs at the top of the Durham board.  Once you have some options then write to the local office and ask them if this is a child with father Joseph.   They will not charge you if it is not.

I think in '81 Ancestry may have the Bilson family as Belson.
Look at RG11/4654 F168 P44

Still can't see any possibles for Ann.
