Hi, I am looking for Alexander Hertel b1836 + wife Emily Martha b1844 they were wed 1868 Poplar, he died Croyden 1878. Children are Emily b1872 Stepney, Susan b1873 Stepney, Charles 1872 Penge and Maud 1877 Penge. Emily Martha wed Henry Davison Young 1885, have found both parts of family 1891 census, but can not locate them 1871 or 1881 Census. thanks Terry

sorry Charles 1876 Pengre not 1872, I have found them 1881 census under namer Hertil living at 35 Knowle Road Lambeth still need 1871 census info. thanks Terry

I've found a Susan Hertel b abt 1874 on 1881 census in an "Asylum for Fatherless Children", Reedham, Croydon.

Could this be your Susan?

I think I've found Emily and Martha on the 1871:

15 Belgrave St, Stepney
RG10/547 f.134 p.10
Martha (looks rather like 'Matha' on the original image, the handwriting is bad) Br??? (could well be 'Brewer'), 55, house proprietor, born Windsor Berks
Emily Hurtell, 26, daughter, married, sailor's wife, b. Wapping

if Alexander was away at sea he may have been missed off the census.
