Hello everyone -  My father was George Hertel Peters, whose mother Maud Peters nee Hertel, daughter of Emily Martha Hertel nee Brewer who was married to Alexander Carl Theodor Leopold Hertel 1835-1878 a Prussian mariner who came to England because of Bismark's policies.  He sailed a Clipper, possibly for the East India Company, to Australia and the Far East before his vessel, The Minnie, was in collision and foundered on 23 May 1871.  All were landed at Falmouth.  The Plimsoll Line author G Hertel Peters.

Emily Martha Brewer nee Clark was married to Richard Benjamin Brewer 1809-1854 who came from Cornwall, where there are still many descendants. Do I know you Cornish Bill? JP

When Captain Hertel died shortly after my grandmother, Maud Hertel was born, the children did eventually go to the Asylum for Fatherless children at Reedham in Surrey.  Emily Martha Hertel then married again Henry Davison Young and had another son (Harry?).

There are very many artifacts still in existence.

I write on behalf of the Henley-on-Thames Archaeological and Historical Group.
Your father was minister at the Henley-on-Thames Congregational Church from 1945 to 1950. In 1948 he wrote a booklet about Humphrey Gainsborough, engineer and inventor, also minister at that church 1748-1776. We have a copy of the booklet in our archive and wish to make it more readily available to our members on our website:
http://www.henley-on-thamesarchaeologicalandhistoricalgroup.org.uk/index.php
We should be most grateful for permission to do so.
Will you please give us this permission?
Best wishes
Graham
