They married on 12 Jun 1863 in Symington, Ayr according to the Familysearch site (extracted record).

If you view the index entry of their marriage at ScotlandsPeople (pay per view but if done carefully, not expensive) then you will be able to see who her parents (and his) were.

Hi Kelt

For certainty and verification, as Nell suggested, their MC would confirm her parents.

There is however a family in Symington, Ayr in the 1851 Census headed by Hector,a blacksmith and Janet, mother. The household includes a Catherine age 10 which fits with the ages you have.

A parent search on IGI for a Hector Walker and Janet McCutcheon shows 11 children, those entries pre-1855 are all submitted entries. At least 4 are post 1855 and actual extract.

For Catherine Walker following her marriage to John Moffat, the following children show on IGI:

1. DAVID MOFFAT  Birth: 05 JUL 1864 Beith, Ayr, Scotland
2. JANET MCCUTCHEON MOFFAT Birth: 13 AUG 1872 Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
3. HECTOR WALKER MOFFAT Birth: 28 APR 1868 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
4. JOHN MOFFAT Birth: 13 AUG 1872 Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

No.s 2/3 look direct hits for her parents' names.

............but to verify, you will still need to see her MC or DC to be 100% sure  ;)

Regards.

Monica

on 1871 census Glasgow she's down as aged 30 but it may have been rounded up or down

You must be looking at one of the census transcriptions online.

The actual census never gives a date of birth. It tells you the age the person said they were on the day of the census. The census was taken about a quarter of the way through the year, so three-quarters of people had not yet had a birthday in census year. Therefore trying to 'calculate' a year of birth by subtracting the age on the census from the year of the census gives a wrong answer three times out of four. Someone listed as 30 in the 1871 census is three times more likely to have been born in 1840 than in 1841. I wish these sites that claim to offer the census would say what is actually in the census, and not mislead people by inaccurate 'calculations'.

Also, the census does tell you where the person said they were born, but not all the transcriptions include this information.

So by all means use the various online census transcriptions as an aid to finding people, but always follow up by looking up the original at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. Depending on which transcription site you were looking at, you will get more information from the original, and a further bonus is that you can check how accurate the transcription is - some of them produce some real fantasy spellings of names and birthplaces.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
