Assize records are at TNA but are often not very illuminating (details of charge, verdict and sentencing). Still worth checkng as you might be lucky and find depostions etc. Check the catalogue on TNA website to see what survives for the year in question.
The local paper (Berkshire Chronicle) is usually far more interesting.
He may have been referred to the assizes by a local quarter session (records at BRO).
The Times may also mention him if his case was interesting or they didn't have much else to report that day.
