What would be the next step to take when scotlandspeople show an entry but say No Image when I pay to view?   Help as to how to proceed in order to verify the entry would be appreciated        grossan

Either email them, or I can have a look for you when I'm researching on Friday.  If no image is available at Register House on their DIGROS system, they will bring me the original census book and allow me to copy down details.

Jo - how generous of you - I have two such entries:
No.l  Date: 16/06/1793  Surname: McLauchlan  Forename:  William  Parent Names/Frame No.:  John McLauchlan/Katharine MacFarlane FR259  Sex: U  Parish: Kippen  GROS Data 484/00 0001

Secondly - is the marriage between John Milne and Elizabeth Barth on 04.07.1854 in Edinburgh - I seem to have mislaid the exact entry so if you need more information on this one I will need to get back to you.

I will be pleased to hear from you again soon  With thanks

Hi Grossan

These entries have no image because they are OPR records (ie before  Statutory Registration began in 1855) and they are not available online - I'll have a look for you and get back to you with the details ASAP - delighted to assist a fellow genie  ;)

As these are OPRs, you will need to look at the microfilms to view them in New Register House. The OPR books are never brought to the customers as they are considered too delicate for public handling. If the microfilm is illegible, you can ask the searchroom supervisor and one of the staff will look at the OPR book upstairs and they will let you know what they find.

I have done that with one that was not legible on the microfilm, and did get some more information. On the film, the bottom section of the page was dark and the writing difficult to make out. Apparently the page (from the 1770s) was suffering from rot, and the writing was only a little easier to read from the book than the film.

The OPR images are scheduled to come online some time in the next few months on the ScoitlandsPeople website, so hopefully most of these "no image" results will disappear then.

Hi - I just assumed   ::)   that these were census docs as they are the ones I have most commonly come across on SP with No Image Available and I have subesequently had a look at the Census book at Register House.  Now I realise that they are OPR's I will be looking them up in the usual way, as ADP says, using the microfilm.

Hello Jo - thanks again for your reply - as this is the first time I have dealt with scotlandspeople I'm not sure if you need the sort of information I sent to you as they come in OPRs.   I have to hand now the information for the second query I mentioned and in case you need it for ease of access I send you that now in the hope that you will find it without too much trouble to yourself.

No: 1  Date: 04/07/1845  Surname: Milne  Forename: John  Spouse Name/Frame No:  Elizabeth Barth/FR68  Sex: M  Parish:  St.Cuthbert's, Edinburg  GROS Data: 685/01  0047

My thanks in advance     grossan

ADP - thanks for your reply - I am feeling my way with the scotlandspeople site but where there are people like yourself ready to lend a hand with the interpretation of the ins and outs of it I can only learn the ropes and improve my technique for researching.
Thank you for explaining      grossan

Hi Grossan - checked out your lookups and info as follows:

Ref 685/2/47 FR 68 St Cuthbert's Edinburgh
John Milne, Compositor residing in <illegible address - big blob on film> and Elizabeth Barth residing in No 50 Buccleuch Street, both in this Parish, youngest lawful daughter of Peter Barth, Compositor, also residing there, having been 3 several times duly and regularly proclaimed in the Parish Church of St Cuthberts in order to marriage and no objections offered.  Married at Edinburgh on the 4th July 1854 by the Rev Berkeley Addison of St Johns E Chapel

Ref 484/1 FR 259  Kippen Baptisms  (this was in a table format rather than narrative) - 16 June 1793  father John McLauchlan, mother Katharine Macfarlane, child bap - William  Witnesses - Congregation

Hope this helps - there's quite a few details in the first one which may be useful, but you never know how much info you will find in OPR's, as the second one shows!

Merry Christmas when it comes!

Jo
