Bridport, Symondsbury - SPRAKE
« on: Tuesday 28 November 06 21:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have just joined this board today, and hope that someone can help me please.

I am trying to trace Joseph T Sprake, born in about 1834. The 1871  census shows him as being born in Symondsbury, while the 1891 census shows Bridport.

He died in 1897 in George Square Hanover, London.  Married to Eliza Perrin from Dunmow Essex and had children: Harry, Charles Henry, Arthur, Annie, Alfred, Fredrick G.

I realise it is short notice (however I only discovered this board today) but I am hoping to visit the Dorset Records Office in Dorchester this Friday (1/12/06) in the hope of finding more information. I would be very grateful if someone could give me any tips or further information.

Thanks
Carl

   Hi Carl....Welcome to Rootschat...

Looks like the parents could be Joseph Sprake and Sarah Hoskins as there is a marriage on the IGI for them in 1831 8 September in Symondsbury , this is extracted from the parish records.
The children are also found on there but as member submitted details so the dates maybe wrong but they are all given as baptised Symondsbury. Joseph T is down as Thomas Joseph @30 Jul 1834.
The dates may help when looking through the registers or fiche.

Nanny Jan and Tazzie,

Wow, thanks very much for such a prompt response, and the useful information.

I know that Saturday might be easier, but I would like to spend the weekend with my girlfriend (aahh sweet I know) and I have holiday to take before the end of the year so....

By the way, what is the IGI please?

Thanks again

Carl

   Hi Carl....

The IGI  is the International Genealogical Index and can be found here...

 www.familysearch.org

It was set up by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ( or the Mormon Church).

It went live on the web July 1999 as I was in The US at the time and the site went mad.

Extracted details of local parish records can be found on the index years and coverage vary as some parish records were not handed over to be filmed.

Member submitted means a member of the church has some connection to the family or name and has done some work in finding them .Beware as sometimes they are wrong...wrong time ..wrong place...wrong person...

Hope you enjoy using Rootschat none of us claim to be experts more addicts I suppose but this everyone in the end.... :)

Good luck at the Record Office.

                    Tazzie

p.s click on the blue link on Nanny jan's post.....loads of Sprake entries.

Nanny Jan  thats a great site!

 :) Hi Sirgeoffrey,
I have around 50 Sprakes in my family tree.  The early ones were all from the Symondsbury area, including my own Gt, gt Grandmother -
Mary Sprake 1813-1872.  She married Gaius Follett in Netherbury March 29th 1842.
Unfortunately, I do not have your chap - possibly a son of one of the later ones.
My earliest is John Sprake & his wife Elizabeth c1720.  These were my 5x Gt Grandparents.
Hope I haven't confused your search.  Willing to help should you require.

Yours:  Peter Jon Sprake-Follett

Hi Peter,

thanks for your post. Was Mary the daughter of William Sprake and Mary Pain?

I have made considerable in roads since my original post and am now back to 1784 and the birth of William Sprake.

Regards

Carl
