Hi,

I am researching the Croudace / Crowdace family tree also.
My focus is Monmouthshire, to where apparently a couple of brothers moved to from the Durham area in the very early 1800s.
My tree comes from a John Croudace.

John had three sons:
John W Crowdace1837–
Charles Henry Crowdace1839–1903
Thomas James Crowdace1841–
( All born in Monmouthshire area ).

Although I have full records of his marriage and full details of his descendants, I cannot find where he came from, as unfortunately he doesn't not appear on any census.

Other Croudaces who appear at about the same time in Monmouthshire include:

Ann Jane - died 1830 aged 20, and parish records state she was ' daughter of John '.
Elizabeth - married a William Pascoe in 1824, and the two witnesses at the wedding were James Croudace and Mary Croudace.

So if you have a James or John Croudace in your family tree from Durham who suddenly ' vanish ' from Durham in about 1800, I'd be very grateful to hear from you !

Hi

When searching around Barnard Castle.. dont forget.. that it actually sits on the border for Durham and North Yorkshire.

For all some children could have been baptised Barnard Castle / Egglestone..

Some may have been baptised Startforth area too.. classed as Yorkshire.. but long ago was actually in Durham.

I have a family who baptised children at Both Barny and Startforth..

Startforth is just over the river.. so dont dismiss a check on the IGI for Yorkshire.. too

There is a John Croudace on the Welsh census, listed as born in 1809 in Barnard Castle on the 1851, 1871 and 1881 census.

Married to a Sarah, no sign of children.

How interesting, wonder which one he is then?  My John b. 1806 stayed in Durham, I have all the census for him.  Maybe he's one of Claire's?

His wife is listed as being born in Whorlton, in 1805.
Census lists Johns profession as Gamekeeper in 1851 and 1871, and on 1881 as farmer of 5 acres and gamekeeper.
His birthplace is listed as Straitlam / Streatham on the 1881 and 1871 census, but Barnard Castle for the 1851 on the ancestry record.
However looking at the actual census form, there is no mention of Barnard Castle, it says Streatham on 1851, Durhamshire on 1871, Straitlam on 1881.

Yes I see the 1851 entry for Streatlam.  So which ancestry record shows Barnard Castle, one of the ancestry trees?
