Looking for the baptism in Barnard Castle for John Croudace born there c1806, earliest information I have on him is 1841 census Sherburn, Durham so don't know parents. Name variations could be Cruddas, Crowdas etc.
Thanks to anyone who can help

Hi Barbara

Barnard Castle is on the IGI for that period of time but there's no John only a ROBERT CRUDDASS in 1809 & a few others in the 1780's & 90's.

Cheers

Jay

Hi Jay,
Yes I had looked there, but I'm hoping someone with access to Barnard Castle Parish records may be able to help - could have been missed off the IGI
Thanks for looking,
Barbara

Hi Claire,

No, have not been able to get further back from John Cruddas 1841 census b.1806 Barnard Castle according to later census.  Wonder if they were brothers?

The family I'm researching comes down from John's son Thomas b.1844 Sherburn married to Margaret Bergen in Sunderland 1874.

I wonder if they were!
Went down the wrong track with Cruddace/Cruddas and there were a number of Cruddaces who were gamekeepers at Streatlam Castle. It's a pain that our cruddaces are just in that interval where nothing covers them. The Cruddas's (as I was researching) seemed to go between Barnard Castle and Streatlam (which is very close to Barnard Castle), so I wonder if this would be a useful link? I wonder if there are any parish records for Streatlam....   ???
I am descended from William's son Henry who moved to Whickham, Durham.
If I discover anything I will let you know

This is the only match for the surname in Co Durham that I can find on the BIVRI:-

John Cruddas
Born - 24th November 1805
Baptised - 26th July 1818 at Egglestone
Parents - Thomas & Elisabeth

Sue

Sorry, should have said only match for a John  :-[

Sue, thank you very much, I think Egglestone is near enough to Barnard Castle to be a very good match, you're a star!

:D :D

Claire, my Cruddas/Croudaces went from Sherburn to West Rainton to Monk Hesledon and then to Hartlepool.  Sorry no match for your William, but I'm very glad you posted the query as it's helped with mine (over a year since I first asked so don't give up!).

You`re most welcome Barbara  ;D  I think Egglestone is about 6 miles from Barnard Castle, pity it didn`t say where he was born but as it was the only match I thought it was worth posting.
