Kings Head Pub - little Marlow
« on: Sunday 26 November 06 19:43 GMT (UK) »

The kings Head Pub in Little Marlow was run at one time by my G Grandmothers parents, Charles Phillips and Ada Ann Phillips?  I have found an entry in a book that tells me that it was a Wethered pub that was run by Joshua Phillips in 1864 and stayed in this familys care for some considerabl time.

I would be greatly interested if anyone has any photos or information regarding the pub of any kind, but particularly whilst in the managership of the Phillips family.

Any indication of books to purchase that give details would be benefical.

Thanks

Corfe

Hi Corfe
If you Google Kings head little marlow quite a bit pops up including this picture

http://www.littlemarlow.btinternet.co.uk/Pubs.htm

According to Robson's 1839 Directory it (then called Old Kings Head) was run by Jesse Phillips see

You could try contacting the local museum they may have old pictures or more directory info.

Thanks Jan

Really pleased to hear that someone called Jesse Phillips in 1839 directory.... first time ever thought to use such a resource - starting to show how green I am at all this.

Have used both links you gave me, and have tried searching both google and Altavista for Kings Head Little Marlow - but can't trace the photo you attached.  Sorry for my ignorance - would appreciate another pointer if possible.

Cheers

Corfe.

Sorry Corfe you've lost me ??? :D Not sure what you mean by being unable to trace the photo - the link that gives the photo is for the Little Marlow village website.

Sorry Jan

Thanks for the 1841 census records - what do you mean by "do" next to each persons name - presume rough indication of age or something else.

Also - have tried the link for below:

http://www.littlemarlow.btinternet.co.uk/Pubs.htm

.....but it only takes me to the pub details on the Little Marlow site - and don't know where to take it to get to the photo?

I'm sure you're going to regret answering to my original query at this rate.

Thanks for your patience.

Hi Corfe

"Josh" Phillips was listed as the proprietor of the Queen's Head (Little Marlow) in the 1830 edition of Pigot's Directory of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Gloucestershire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire.

This is weird Corfe - when  I click the link I gave 3 photos and addresses appear of the 3 pubs in Little Marlow - 2 which now appear relevant to you, bonus. Do you not get the photos at all ? Or are you wanting to now how to save them to your computer? If the latter is the case
Right click on the photo , select save image as, then save in what file you want to. When you open your saved file you will get an individual picture of the pub about 3 times the size of the original.

Do is what the enumerator puts as shortened form of ditto. By the way I should have also said that the family were all born in county - the 41 does not give exact birthplaces. In addition ages of those over 15 were supposed to be rounded to nearest 5 below eg 15 is 15-19 on the 1841 but I see the enumerator failed to follow his instructions in this case :D

Hope this is of help - please don't worry about asking further questions
Cheers

Hi Corfe

I am also interested in The King's Head pub at Little Marlow.  My research shows my 4 x great grandfather, Joshua Phillips (1787 - 1864) at the King's Head in 1847 (Post Office Directory) and at The Queen's Head in 1830 (Pigot's Directory).

It does appear to have "stayed in the family" with his grand-daughter (my 2 x great grandmother), Elizabeth Phillips showing there in the 1881 census).

I see you posts are from a few years ago .. I have a photo if you are still interested.

It would appear that we have common ancestors ...
