MASON - Greenhithe,Kent
« on: Sunday 26 November 06 15:46 GMT (UK) »
Dorcas Mason was born about 1802. She married James Underwood 1834 in Lambeth, and the 1851 census gives her place of birth as Greenwich, Kent. The 1861 gives this as Greenhithe, Kent. She died in 1867.

Where would I find a baptism record or parents' names? The Greenhithe churches seem to have been built after that time, the IGI has nothing extracted for the area, and FamilyHistoryOnline have no record of her.

Swanscombe baptisms register has Edward and Diana Mason having children between 1795 and 1805, but no Dorcas (Dorcas' third child was named Diana, born about 1838 - a common name?). Stone-next-Dartford register has no likely candidates.

Any suggestions?

Thanks. I've now emailed a couple of MASON researchers in Dartford and Graveseend, which appear to be nearby.

Have you tried St Mary's Greenhithe, that was built circa 1856

http://www.stmarygreenhithe.com

I think they are on City Ark.......
try  http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/query/results/?Mode=Search&PathList=%2FEcclesiastical_Rochester_Archdeaconry_Area_Parishes%2FP362B_GREENHITHE_1857_1988%2F%0A&SearchWords=&DateList

other option try the Dartford library, the staff there are pretty good.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, that's where I downloaded the Baptisms for Swanscombe and Stone-next-Dartford.

One day, I'll crack it!

Hi again, casalguidi.

That does look a strong possibility, although from ages in the 41, 51 and 61 censuses that would have made her around 11 when christened. If that Edward and Diane are the same as those having children in the Swanscombe records, it seems odd to have the gap.

However, the 1911 census proved I was chasing the wrong family in this case, so I'm not actively following this line any more. As there are UNDERWOOD connections back to Suffolk in the mid-1700s and HERRINGs in New Amsterdam in the early 1600s I have left the tree online for others, as I left it, at
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pjutree-2

Definite updates will be added, though. Many thanks again
