Elizabeth Goss Herring c1781
« on: Sunday 26 November 06 13:26 GMT (UK) »
Hello

According to the 1851 Census my 4xGt GM Elizabeth Goss Herring was born in Ringland c1781.  She married Richard Dewing c1806 and they had 10 or 11 children (I think Mary Anne is a ring in as she was not mentioned in Richard's will  ;)).

I have not been able to find any record of Elizabeth's birth, parents or marriage so would appreciate any suggestions or assistance that anyone could provide.

Cheers,

Jane

Thanks Yokel!

Can you tell me where you found that record?  Do you have access to other Ashwicken births &/or marriages?

Cheers, Jane

Ah - thanks!

Having located her marriage (thanks to the Yokel) I think I have now found her parents marriage too: Tomasina Goss m William Herring, 2 Dec 1779 in Norwich, (from the Norfolk Transcription Archive) and I have even found a few more generations of the Goss family in the IGI.

Not much joy on the Herring side.  There is a tantalising reference to a William Herring b c1753, Ashwicken, d c1826.   He is mentioned in a couple of Ancestral files but no further details.  His dates would fit for Elizabeth's father but I can't find any further reference to him or any other likely candidates.

Jadewing - not sure if you are still looking.

Elizabeth Goss Herring was the daughter of William Herring and Teamesine Goss. William Herring was the owner or proprietor of Ashwicken Hall in Ashwicken, Norfolk. At this stage I think Teamesine was the daughter of Thomas Goss - a wealth Norwich merchant.

Elizabeth married Richard Dewing. On the death of William Herring, Elizabeth inherited much of the estate. Richard and Elizabeth lived there for many years. I am still working my way through his will.

Jadewing I note from your profile we are located on the same city. Small world is we are both descended from Richard Dewing.
